Clemson (4-0), ranked as high as #13 in the nation, will travel to the coast of South Carolina to play at College of Charleston (4-0) on Friday at 5:00 PM at Patriots Point Field. It will be the Tigers? first road contest of the season. The game will be broadcast live on the radio by WCCP (104.9 FM) out of Clemson and can be heard live on the internet at WCCPFM.com.
Clemson will then travel directly to Columbia to take on #3 South Carolina (4-0) at Sarge Frye Field on Saturday at 1:30 PM. The two teams will play the second of four games during the regular season on Sunday at 2:00 PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Series Clemson and College of Charleston have met 18 times on the diamond. The Tigers have won all 18 games, including a 19-7 victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium during the 2007 season, the only meeting that year. The Tigers hit four home runs in the contest, including one each by D.J. Mitchell, Doug Hogan, and J.D. Burgess. The Tigers also scored 10 runs in the fourth inning en route to the 12-run victory. During the 2006 season, Clemson defeated College of Charleston twice, including a 6-0 victory at Patriots Point Field and 1-0 win at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers also registered victories over College of Charleston in 2005 (2), 2004 (2), 2003 (2), 2002 (2), and 2001 (1). Prior to the matchup in the 2001 season, the two teams had not played since 1912. The Tigers lead 6-0 in games played at College of Charleston. Head Coach Jack Leggett is 12-0 against the Cougars as well. The Starting Pitchers College of Charleston will start junior righthander Danny Meszaros (0-0, 7.20 ERA) on the mound. The Boca Raton, FL native has made one appearance this season. He started the season-opener against George Mason in the first game of a doubleheader on February 23. In 5.0 innings pitched, he allowed seven hits, four runs, and two walks with seven strikeouts in a no-decision. Clemson will counter with freshman righthander Graham Stoneburner (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on Friday. The Richmond, VA native made his first career appearance on Sunday in Clemson?s 10-3 win over Mercer. He allowed just three hits (all singles), no runs, and one walk with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched in a starting role. The Cougars College of Charleston, led by ninth-year Head Coach John Pawlowski, enters Friday?s game against Clemson with a 4-0 record after defeating Coastal Carolina 13-12 on Tuesday. The Cougars also swept George Mason in three games by a combined score of 45-29 last weekend. Pawlowski lettered at Clemson three times (1983-85) and went on to play two years (1987,88) in the Major Leagues with the Chicago White Sox. He later went on to be Clemson?s pitching coach from 1994-98, coaching the likes of Kris Benson, Billy Koch, and Ken Vining. College of Charleston is hitting .399 with a .510 on-base percentage and is averaging 14.5 runs per game. The team has also totaled 13 doubles and 15 home runs, good for a .766 slugging percentage. Michael Harrington is hitting a team-best .625 with 10 runs scored, three homers, and 10 RBIs. Brandon Sizemore is batting .444, while Gabe Marchant leads the team in homers (4) and RBIs (12). The pitching staff has a 8.29 ERA and .333 opponents? batting average. Righthander Jesse Simpson has the team?s lone save along with 10 strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched over a team-high three relief appearances. The team is fielding at a .963 clip as well. The Tigers will take to the road for the first time on Friday when they play at College of Charleston. The Tigers are hitting .357 with a .436 on-base percentage and .643 slugging percentage. Doug Hogan is hitting .400 and is riding a 19-game hitting streak dating back to 2007. Stan Widmann is hitting .467, while Wilson Boyd is hitting .438 and leading the team in homers (4) and RBIs (9). Centerfielder Addison Johnson has yet to play in a game this season due to a sore hamstring. His status will be re-evaluated on Friday. Nester Making Most of Opportunities Freshman catcher John Nester (Greer, SC) has only played three games (all off the bench) and totaled four at-bats in 2008, but he has made the most of his opportunities. In each of the last two games, he has come off the bench and hit home runs. Against Mercer on February 24, he hit a solo homer, then he hit a two-run homer against High Point on February 27. With starting catcher Doug Hogan playing his final season at Clemson, Nester is in line to compete for the starting job behind the plate next season. Ben Paulsen started the scoring with a three-run homer in the first inning. In the seventh inning, Kyle Parker, Wilson Boyd, and John Nester all hit homers in the Tigers? six-run inning. Paulsen was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two walks, while Stan Widmann added three of Clemson?s 14 hits. Seven Tigers took the mound, including starter Craig Gullickson, who did not allow an earned run in 3.0 innings pitched to earn his first career victory. The Tigers also turned three double plays.
