Clemson Bounced from the ACC Baseball Tournament

Salem, VA - Ninth-seeded Duke scored seven runs in the second inning and held on to a 7-4 victory over fourth-seeded Clemson Friday in the second round of the 2003 ACC Baseball Championship. Duke's Tim Layden gave up just two runs in seven innings of work on the mound and registered three hits in four at-bats.

The Tigers now await word on the possibility of hosting a regional to be played May 30-June 1.

The announcement will be made Sunday afternoon at 3:20 on ESPN.

Well, the guy sitting next to me (Tim Layden) is the main reason we are sitting here as winners. We were hoping that Timmy would go out and throw like he did the last time we played Clemson. He put us in a situation to keep the pressure off of us. We had a big inning in the second and gave him a little bit of a cushion. We knew coming in that if Timmy threw well that we would be in the ball game. We felt that (Tyler) Lumsden would throw well too, and before the game, we were saying that it would be a quick one-nothing, two-nothing in the eighth or ninth inning. They made a couple of errors that prolonged an inning and we had a couple of big hits there and put seven on them and it made it a ball game.

On Layden’s performance today as compared to earlier this season:

People talk about sophomore slumps, but I don’t really believe in that. He (Layden) had an unbelievable year last year hitting and on the mound. This year people gave him more respect. From a pitching standpoint, early in the year, he wasn’t getting ahead of hitters. He’d walk one, strike one out. He couldn’t get the ball down the zone – maybe he was pressing, trying too much, I don’t know. He took last summer and this fall off (from pitching), because he was a little tender toward the end of the year. I think that had a lot to do with it, plus, it was cold and rainy. When you’re a two position guy, you don’t get all the pens you need. Three weeks ago down at Clemson is when he started throwing well and we were hoping he could continue that.

Duke Pitcher Tim Layden on today’s game:

Every time you step onto the field, you have something to prove. And, regardless of your record or ERA, you are going to go out there and battle. Today, I just basically did that and went out there and threw out the stats and record book and pitched and got the ball down.

On the seven run six run lead after the first:

Any time you go out there with a fairly big lead you feel more comfortable on the mound, the pressure is on them to put the runs up on the board to beat you. After that, I just went out there and tried to keep the ball down and make them hit the ball – let them do their jobs.

Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett:

The same thing got us today that has been getting us lately; the big inning. We didn’t play very well defensively and we had opportunities to hit with men on base. That has been one of those things that we have been having trouble doing recently. Tim Layden did a nice job throwing his change-up and we didn’t make adjustments to it. That one inning killed us. We put ourselves in the position in the end when we got excited, but we put ourselves in too big of a hole to recover from. It has been one of those things that we have been doing too often lately.

(On Layden’s pitching performance)

He threw strikes and when they weren’t strikes they were off-speed stuff. We didn’t recognize it well and didn’t make good adjustments. We got a little stubborn and tried to swing at them. Not many of his change-ups were strikes and we swung at them. We kept him in the ballgame longer than we needed to.

It’s tough. There are no excuses. We should have made the plays. We played sloppy today and didn’t have that concentration that we had earlier this season.

Clemson Centerfielder Kyle Frank (On team’s confidence)

I guess it depends on which team shows up. The A game shows up we pitch well early and get a couple of runs. Once we get confidence we are a different team. Like today and yesterday we get behind a couple of runs and it really puts pressure on everyone. The tension level in the dugout goes up. It is tough to play that way all the time.
