Clemson Baseball Ranked in the Top 25

by -

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Texas is ranked No. 1 in the first

regular-season Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball

poll of 2005.

Picked No. 1 in the nation in Collegiate Baseball's pre-season poll

last December, the Longhorns opened the season with a 3-game sweep at

San Diego St. with 9-3, 13-5 and 7-0 victories. During its three games

with San Diego St., the Texas pitching staff compiled 35 strikeouts for

an average of

11.6

per game.

While 19 of 30 teams in the first poll have yet to play a game, one key

series over the past weekend pitted defending national champion Cal. St.

Fullerton against Stanford, both ranked in the top six in the nation.

The

Titans knocked off the Cardinal two games to one in games played at

Fullerton, Calif.

Poll Notes: Four teams which have started strong include Miami, Fla.

(4-0),

Arizona (3-0), Long Beach St. (5-1, two wins over Arizona St.), Florida

St.

(6-0) and Oklahoma St. (3-0). Rice (1-0) started the season with a bang

in a

5-2 win over Central Missouri St. as pitchers Joe Savery, Josh Geer and

Bryce Cox combined for a school record 21 strikeouts. The 21 strikeouts

were the most since Rice started baseball in 1913.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball

poll.

Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
