Clemson Baseball Drops Out of Two Polls

by -

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida St. (44-8-1) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll for the second straight week. The Seminoles, which swept a 3-game series from Maryland over the weekend, have won five in a row and lead the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 16-5 record.

Florida St. has a glistening team ERA of 2.64 through 53 games and has nearly a 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio (446 strikeouts and 140 walks). The Seminoles have stolen 83 bases while limiting opponents to only 33 in 62 attempts. FSU has picked off 16 base runners. On offense, the team has banged out 124 doubles with six players hitting 10 or more.

Rice, ranked No. 2 with a 43-8 overall record, beat Nevada two of three games last weekend. It marked the 19th consecutive Western Athletic Conference series the Owls have won dating back to the 2001 season.

Poll Notes: Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week, including Clemson (2-4 last week), U.C. Riverside (1-3), and New Mexico St. (0-3). Three new teams in the poll this week include South Carolina (35-17, winners of 7 straight games), South Alabama (36-14, first place Sun Belt Conference with 15-6 record), and Texas Christian (33-19, second place in Conference USA with 20-7 record).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

DURHAM, N.C.--Florida State swept a conference series on the road to retain the top spot in Baseball America's Top 25 college baseball rankings.

Maryland had won three straight series in Atlantic Coast Conference play, but the Terrapins lost three rather lopsided games to the visiting Seminoles, who have won 10 of their last 13 and remain in first place in the league. No. 2 Rice won a road series at second-place Nevada in the Western Athletic Conference to keep pace. Third-ranked Long Beach State swept UC Riverside, knocking the Highlanders down four spots and setting up a Big West showdown next weekend between the first-place 49ers and second-place Cal State Fullerton, ranked fourth.

The Southeastern Conference has four teams in the rankings as No. 19 South Carolina joined the poll for the first time since March 17. The Gamecocks swept a series from host Alabama to move into a tie with No. 14 Auburn and unranked Mississippi for second place overall in the SEC. Mississippi State lost a series at Georgia to fall to 20th, last among the league's four ranked clubs.

Joining the Gamecocks are two other teams that weren't in the poll last week but which are not strangers to the rankings in 2003. No. 23 South Alabama, the Sun Belt Conference leader, and No. 25 Virginia Commonwealth, the Colonial Athletic Association's regular-season champion, both re-entered the rankings for the first time since the preseason.

Baseball America's staff determines the Top 25 rankings, and records (which do not reflect ties) are through games of May 11.
