Boyd's Blasts Lead Tigers To Sweep Of Mercer

by - Correspondent -

CLEMSON - When power bats like Andy D'Alessio, Taylor Harbin and Marquez Smith left the Clemson lineup at the end of the 2007 season, many wondered who would help incumbent catcher Doug Hogan shoulder the load.

Of all the possibilities, few likely brought up the name of Wilson Boyd.

Yet it's Boyd doing his best D'Alessio impersonation through the season's first three games. After homering in his first at-bat of the year Saturday, the redshirt sophomore cranked two more on Sunday afternoon - in the same inning, no less - to lead the Tigers to a 10-3 win and a series sweep of visiting Mercer.

Boyd became the first Clemson player to homer twice in the same inning since Kyle Frank turned the trick in 2003.

And both his long balls were timely. The first, a solo shot with one out in the third inning, gave the Tigers (3-0) a 1-0 lead. His second, later in the inning, was a three-run shot that made it 9-0. Both blasts landed on deck in right field which houses the Cajun Cafe.

The six-run uprising was more than enough support for redshirt freshman righthander Graham Stoneburner (1-0).

Stoneburner pitched five scoreless innings in his collegiate debut, allowing just three hits. He struck out three and walked only one, a successful return to action after missing last season with a torn ACL.

Four other Clemson reliever followed, three of them - Craig Gullickson, Casey Harman and Alex Martin - pitching scoreless innings. Junior college transfer Trey Delk was touched up for three runs in the eighth. by the Bears (0-3).

Stan Widmann, J.D. Burgess and John Hinson all had two hits for the Tigers. Redshirt freshman catcher John Nester added a solo home run.

Nine of the runs and 10 of Clemson's hits came off Mercer starter and loser, John Hoelzer.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, hosting High Point. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
