Baseball Remains Perfect with First Road Win |
Charleston, SC -- Jarrod Schmidt drove in six runs as Clemson topped the College of Charleston 14-6 in front of 2473 at Patriots Point Field Friday night in college baseball action.
With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth, Clemson exploded for seven runs. Schmidt had the big hit of the inning when the rightfielder cracked a three run homerun over the left field wall with one out. The Tigers crossed the plate seven times despite only five hits in the inning. The Cougars who were guilty of four errors on the night, had two miscues in the fifth.
The College of Charleston got on the board first when second baseman Jack Arroyo singled and came around to score after a wild pitch. After two Tiger runs in the top of the fourth, Charleston answered when Steven Jackson's wild pitch allowed Mickey Torello to score. Arroyo led the Cougars effort with two hits and two runs scored.
The Cougars tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth by posting four runs. Arroyo led off the inning with a single followed by a Jasha Balcom double. Lee Curtis and Matt Lauderdale followed with RBI singles and Curtis scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 9-5. Stanley Nix singled to score Lauderdale but was stranded on second.
Jackson, the Clemson starter picked up his first win of the year while CofC's Ryan Johnson(3-1) suffered his first loss for the Cougars. Johnson allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings.
Clemson, 4-0 on the season, will return to action Saturday when they visit rival South Carolina. First pitch is at 4:00p.m.
