Baseball Falls to UVA in ACC Tournament Opener

FORT MILL — Most people probably laughed when Clemson coach Jack Leggett said
he was weary of Virginia prior to the opening of the Atlantic Coast
Conference Tournament.

After all, the Tigers had closed the regular season with a three-game sweep
of the Cavaliers last weekend, outscoring them 30-6, and came into
Wednesday's first-round game seeded No. 2.

As it turns out, Leggett's fear was justified.

Dan Street threw a complete-game six-hitter, leading the No. 7 seeded Cavs
(25-29) to a 7-3 victory at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill.

The loss means Clemson returns to action in the loser's bracket at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday, facing North Carolina.

"He (Street) was around the plate and did a good job of keeping us off
balance," said Leggett. "We continue to struggle with some spots in the
bottom of our lineup...it's a problem we've had all season. Somebody's got to
step up for us."

Street (4-4) battled his way out of early trouble, including a bases-loaded
situation in the bottom of the second. He allowed all three runs in the fifth
inning, but seemingly got stronger as he went through the late innings.

His resiliancy and command may have been a little surprising. A strain in his
shoulder had kept Street off the mound for three weeks before Wednesday's
start.

"That may bother other pitchers, but it really doesn't affect me," he said.
"I don't overpower people...I change speeds and stay around the plate. I felt
comfortable out there."

Clemson's (37-19) only breakthrough against Street came in the fifth.

After Steve Pyzik doubled to lead off the inning, Ryan Riley followed with a
walk. Casey Stone then doubled to the gap in left-center, scoring both
runners to pull the Tigers within 4-2.

A wild throw on the play advanced Stone to third, and one out later he scored
on a sacrifice fly by Khalil Greene to make it 4-3.

The Cavs answered in the top of the eighth on Hunter Wyant's bases loaded,
two out, two-run bloop single to put his team ahead 6-3.

Robert Word's solo home run in the eighth gave Virginia its final run.

The Cavs had taken the early lead with four runs in the third inning, three
coming on Joe Benick's opposite-field home run down the left field line Sthat
just cleared the fence before slicing foul.

Matt Henrie (5-3) pitched 4 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss,
allowing four runs (three earned).

"Matt just wasn't as sharp as he has been, and that third inning really put
us in a hole," Leggett said. "But if anybody can come out of the loser's
bracket, we can. We've got the pitching to do it."

Leggett said Steve Reba (10-3, 2.22 ERA) will start today for the Tigers.
