DURHAM, NC -- Clemson freshmen Jeff Baker and Jarrod Schmidt have been named first-team Freshman All-Americans according to Baseball America. Clemson and Virginia Commonwealth were the only two schools in the nation to have a pair of selections on the first team. Earlier, both Baker and Schmidt were chosen first-team freshman All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball.

Baker was named as the first-team designated hitter, while Schmidt was chosen as a starting pitcher. Baker hit 11 home runs and drove in 64 runs in batting .313 for Clemson's 51-18 team that advanced to the College World Series. His home run total led the team and ranked tied for second highest in Clemson history. His RBI total led the team.

Schmidt had a perfect 9-0 record in 1999, the top winning percentage on the club. He had a 3.61 ERA, second best on the team, and he had 63 strikeouts, second among Tiger pitchers. Schmidt also helped out at the plate, hitting five home runs and knocking in 26 runs.
