Smith has personal reasons to delay enrollment

CLEMSON – Woodland (Dorchester, SC) athlete Robert Smith said his decision to enroll in Clemson for the summer semester rather than in January was for purely personal reasons.

Smith was set to enroll in January, but made the decision to continue playing basketball for Woodland before heading to Clemson in late May.

“It didn’t have anything to do with transcript or anything like that,” Smith told TigerNet Sunday afternoon. “The coaches at Clemson tell me that as far as my academics go, I am one of their most qualified players. But I had my reasons, and they were just personal reasons.”

Smith took his official visit to Clemson the first weekend in January, and then was back up last weekend for an unofficial visit just so he could spend time with some of his future teammates.

“We had a real good time,” he said. “I got to spend time with Tony McNeal, who I would have been rooming with had I come in January. But I got to spend time with him and people like DeShawn Williams and the rest of the guys. I got to meet and talk to everybody.”

Smith (5-10, 200) said he thinks the coaches are going to try him out at safety once he gets on campus.

“I think they are going to most likely let me play strong safety, and maybe even a little free safety,” he said. “The plan for me coming in is that I would like to play this year. If I don’t, and I get redshirted and the coaches think I’m not ready to play, then that’s ok. I don’t want to waste a year if I’m not physically ready. But I talked to the coaches and they said I was just as big as or bigger than a lot of the players already there. I just need to focus on my speed and my training and be ready when summer gets here.”
