Jacksonville game-changer has Tigers at the top of his list

Speed is one thing, and having the ability to make plays on the football field is another.

Truly special players have both qualities, and the Clemson Tigers are in early on an athlete out of Florida who his head coach says has both.

(6-2, 185) is a 2013 prospect out of Wolfson (Jacksonville, FL) High School who plays running back and defensive back, and he picked up an offer from the Tigers last week, according to his high school coach.

Clemson wide receivers coach Jeff Scott was back in his familiar stomping grounds – he spent a lot of time there last season recruiting linebacker Tony Steward – and he extended the offer to a player that so far only has one other offer (Southern Miss).

“To get that offer this early, he was just ecstatic,” Wolfson head coach Greg Meyer told TigerNet. “He is a game-changer, and he is on the radar of the majority of upper Division 1 schools. I know that Chip Kelly is really excited about him, and he will have his pick of offers before it’s all over. He is a great player who is also great academically, and he will have his pick of schools. That combination makes him a can't-miss prospect.”

Meyer said that Sasser has a “knack for the dramatic.”

“On special teams, it is really quite noticeable,” he said. “He took four kicks back to the house for touchdowns last season, and he also returned two interceptions for touchdowns, and one of those went for 100 yards. He is a great open field tackler, and he is a shut-down corner that we play a little more at safety. Sometimes we line him up at wide receiver, and we started him at running back as a freshman.”

Meyer said that one play in particular from last season stands out to him.

“On this one play, we were punting from our own 20-yard line,” he said. “The punt got blocked, and of course only bad things can happen after that. But somehow he had the presence to get back there, and he scooped it up and took it back for a touchdown. He knows how to use his blockers very, very well.”

Sasser told TigerNet that making big plays comes down to using your blockers when they are there – but not counting on them.

“I look at it like I have to do whatever I have to do to get into the endzone,” Sasser said. “You can follow your blockers, but you can't depend on them because people are going to miss blocks. You just have to act like getting into the endzone is the important thing and that one person isn’t going to bring you down.”

Meyer said that Sasser projects as a defensive back on the next level.

“He could play wide receiver with no problem,” Meyer said. “But his stock is going to be highest as a defensive back. He is just a tremendous athlete. He led us to the elite eight in basketball as our second-leading scorer. He could probably play basketball in college, but football is where it is going to be at for him.”

Meyer said that Sasser is going to be at Dabo Swinney’s camp in June.

“Right now, he is going to Clemson’s camp in mid-June,” Meyer said. “Florida St. is another one that is on his radar. We actually have three players that we are taking up there – defensive tackle/offensive tackle Jordan Hawkins (6-2, 270) and athlete Lex Walton. Both of those players have been offered by Southern Miss, and Coach Scott said the Clemson coaches wanted to take a better look at them in the camp.”

Sasser said that Clemson has jumped to the top of his list with the offer.

“That offer is big,” Sasser said. “That makes me want to keep working hard. I didn’t expect a big school like Clemson to look at me that fast. I know that is a good school, and I know they had C.J. Spiller. I am looking into them really hard because I really like Clemson. I feel like whoever gets me is getting a winner. I am just a winner. I like to give it my all on every play to help my team.”
