Eason To Undergo Series of Heart Tests

CLEMSON - Senior defensive lineman Nick Eason will undergo a series of heart tests this afternoon after complaining of chest pains in recent days, according to a source speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Eason will not be on the practice field this morning and likely will miss the afternoon workout, as well.

"There's definite concern about his health," the source said. "Hopefully the tests will come back negative, but right now the concerns are legitimate."

The source said Clemson's medical staff was "upset" that Eason apparently had waited a few days before confiding in them. It was just two years ago that lineman Brandon Rouse died of a previously undetected heart condition while watching a movie at a local theater.

The pending heart tests were confirmed this morning by Clemson Sports Information Director Tim Bourret.

"He'll watch practice (from the sidelines) this morning, then they'll do the tests," Bourret said shortly after 8:30 a.m. "We won't know anything else until after the tests are done."

Eason is considered an integral part of Clemson's defensive line, and has been looking forward to a strong senior season. His effectiveness was limited last season due to recovery from a torn Achilles tendon on one foot and a severely sprained ankle on the other.

But healthy and happy as prefall camp opened, Eason has been in good spirits and seems to be playing with no lingering effects from the injuries.
