Bryant continues to wait..and work

ANDERSON – He waits. He works out. And dreams of the day he can finally be a part of the Clemson football family.

Martavis Bryant has taken the long road to get to Clemson, but when he finally enrolls in school in May and can begin football workouts, the journey will be almost over.

“It’s been pretty bad with all of the waiting,” Bryant told TigerNet Thursday morning. “But I haven’t minded it too much. I have gotten better and I’ve grown. This has been just a phase for me, and as long as I get there, then how I got there and how long it took doesn’t matter.”

Bryant was a member of Clemson’s 2010 recruiting class, but an error in his high school transcript – no fault of his – forced him to spend last season at Hargrave Military Academy. He is ranked as the No. 3 prep school player [regardless of position] in the nation by one recruiting service. At Hargrave, he was the top receiver for an offense that was quarterbacked by Doug Williams Jr., the son of the former Super Bowl Champion. He had five catches for 174 yards and two scores in his first game, including touchdown receptions that were 60 and 74 yards in length.

Bryant ended the eight-game season with 20 catches for 510 yards, and eight of his grabs went for touchdowns. Following the season, Bryant was scheduled to enroll in Clemson in January, but again had to wait for clearance and missed the deadline to enroll.

He has now been cleared by the NCAA, and will enroll in Clemson in May.

“I have no idea what it’s going to be like when I finally get there,” he said. “But I’m more than ready to get to work and help my team out as much as possible.”

In the meantime, he works out with the players at T.L. Hanna, his former high school, and works on improving what he started at Hargrave.

“I love going up to the school and working out with them,” he said. “So far it has been going pretty good. Hargrave got me used to the faster game speeds, and once I get to Clemson I will be ready to go. I am working on my ball skills, and getting my hands better. I am not jumping at balls as much as I used to.”

Bryant runs a 4.3 40-yard dash, but said he wants to be more than a speed guy for the Tigers.

“I can be a speed guy, but I also want to be that possession guy. I have talked to [new offensive coordinator Chad] Coach Morris once about the offense, but I can't wait to get there and be a part of the meetings.”
