Outside linebacker LaChaston Smith (Statesville, N.C./South Iredell) committed Thursday to play for Virginia, multiple sources report.

Florida, East Carolina, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Tennessee and South Carolina also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot, 215-pound prospect. Clemson and North Carolina State were among the other programs recruiting Smith.

Smith registered 82 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and two interceptions last fall. As a sophomore, he posted 99 tackles, 24 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

He took an unofficial visit to Death Valley for the Clemson-North Carolina game in 2011. He took an unofficial visit to Clemson for Elite Junior Day in Jan. 2012. His three favorite schools growing up were South Carolina, Clemson, and Florida.
