Steele says replacing defensive standouts is key for spring practice

Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele has to replace some pretty good players from last season, but he says the talent is on hand to keep things "status quo." Full Story »

Steele is the man, plain and simple

That was an excellent interview by CKS. He got right into the depths of defense and gave straight-to-the-point reviews and expectations of the players. Most coaches prance right through these interviews.

I'm excited about the defense yet again.

...but we did get the obligatory Steele comment about players using their "eyes".

"We are not playing our offense"

Mar 3, 2011, 10:46 PM

I like this statement for two reasons.
1. Troy runs the no huddle, fast pace spread offense. I am perfectly fine with the Clemson defense not working against it except for the week prior to that game(for Troys sake)
2. Although I graduated from Troy I hold season tickets to Clemson through the fiance(CU grad). I have seen a decrease in Troy's defense when the new offense was put in place. Troy was always a good defensive program putting many NFL defensive men out there and also providing Clemson with a defensive coordinator around 2005(ish cant remember his name). Over the years after the spread was put in the defense has decreased. It will be good for clemson's program to not harp on playing against their own offense.(but since I did go to VT for my masters I hope they do so the Hokies can beat the tigers....again).

Auburn too.***

not this year. no way VT beats us...

we could lose to Troy and even Auburn but VT is done. Goodman will have a field day.

Let us not be deceived by phrases about ‘Man taking charge of his own destiny.’ All that can really happen is that some men will take charge of the destiny of others. . . . The more completely we are planned the more powerful they will be. - C.S. Lewis

DT is thin. Hope they find some solutions.***

I lilke Steele, but this quote is dumb...

Mar 4, 2011, 9:20 AM

"It's about the fundamentals and the process of developing the players, not the results."

Am I just not reading that correctly? It's all about results, isn't it?

To quote the great Allen Iverson...

Mar 4, 2011, 9:31 AM [ in reply to I lilke Steele, but this quote is dumb... ]

he's talkin' bout practice.

He pretty much clarifies that in the next sentence, when he points out they actually call certain plays in a scrimmage in order to get the execution of the play on film. He's not talking about games.

At this point, the focus is on assignment football, knowing your position responsibilities, and developing cohesion with your teammates. If by "results" he means wins and losses (which in the context of the interview I think he does), they are way down the road and the basics are more important at this point.

Considering the product Steele put on the field last year, I trust him more than any other coach we have. Regardless of the position our offense put us in or the opponent, our defense consistently did their best to put us in a position to compete.
