Clemson is ranked #15 for strength of schedule by bleacher report, but
Alabama is ranked #2 ?!? (based on the weakness of most of the teams they play) -- http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2694102-ranking-college-footballs-25-hardest-schedules-for-2017

Clemson’s bye comes a week earlier, but doesn’t significantly help them, (marginally at best it is added prep time for Venables to re-teach the option defense.)
Alabama has a bye week right before LSU and a light mid November before Auburn. After a FSU they’re not really challenged until possibly Oct. (but really November).
