Furman was once very stiff competiton for Clemson & SCAR

Dec 14, 2013, 8:58 PM

... they put some really good teams on the floor, sort of like Davidson has been able to do recently.

Old timers will remember Tree Rollins, Stan Rome, Colon Abraham versus 6'9" Clyde Mayes and 7'1" Fessor "Moose" Leonard. Those Furman teams were genuine national powers.

Seems as if they haven't been good for a really long while though.

used to take Picts for Furman. Went to a couple North South double headers against great NCSt and NC teams w Thompson, Burleson, Ford, and Kupchak. Fun times

I remember that the coach of the Jacksonville Dolphins who just played UCLA for the National Championship in 1970 left Jacksonville to coach Furman. If I remember correctly his name was Joe Williams.

in the late 70's under Eddie Holbrook. For about 10 years they were as good if not better than us. 30 year drought now, sad. They have a decent tradition. Frank Selvy, Darrell Floyd, Mayes, Bruce Grimm, George Singleton, Mel Daniel. Remember when they beat NC and NCS back-to=back nights in the old North/South doubleheader in Charlotte?
