Never heard of a 1-step vertical

I guess it's a basketball thing? Guess it makes sense since you generally don't dunk flat-footed.

Re: Roper 1 step vertical & K.J. McDaniels

the 1 step vertical is measured because it is unlikely that any player will jump completely flat-footed. i have seen J.R. leap up close and personal, and he flat-out leaps over people. i know McDaniels is a leaper, but he is also at least 5 inches taller than J.R. so the vertical measurement might be higher, but McDaniels by virtue of his height probably still gets higher on the court.
J.R. is a player, and we are going to be glad he chose to attend Clemson... think K.C. Rivers but about 4-5 inches shorter...

The vertical measurement subtracts the athlete's reach, so it is actually how far he gets off the ground.
