What is that really worth? Not dissing it in the least,

just wondering if it has any value whatsoever in determining a team's real strength at this early point in the season. UNC, for example, has played a pretty soft schedule. Who thinks they're not the team to beat by a long shot in the ACC, however? So, someone who knows, tell me what good it is early in the season.

posting it as a reply so I didn't have to take the time to make the reference. But thanks for trying to make me look stupid.

Now, if you have some light to shed, I'd like to know what it really says about the team, if anything.

not worth a whole lot right now because there is a lot of basketball left to play. The RPI is valuable, however, as the NCAA tourney brackets are heavily influenced based on the final RPI rankings.

Ok. That's what I thought. Thanks.

Dec 15, 2008, 10:49 AM

I hope we're still in the top 20 after ACC play has begun.

How can any poll that has UNC at #16 be worth anything at all?

Re: Clemson Basketball #1 in Latest RPI Calculations

did you read the first paragraph of the article?

"The RPI formula consists of a team's winning percentage, the average winning percentage of its opponents, and the strength of schedule of a team's opponents."

UNC hasn't played a tough schedule yet, so their undefeated ranking against a weak SOS puts them lower in the poll than the teams who have done well against a tougher schedule. Yea UNC is a great team, might not lose a single game this year, blah blah blah, but your ignorance shows that you don't belong here.

wait, this is Tigernet. you are exactly where you belong

Re: Clemson Basketball #1 in Latest RPI Calculations

adcrook-you are the one that is ignorant. All that i was saying was that unc is really closer to #1 than clemson is and the fact that unc is only # 16 makes the ratings pretty close to useless when the heels are the concensus pick to win it all. All that said, i would like the tigers to be better than unc more than anyone but let's put the rpi in the proper perspective. We all know that success in ACC play is what will inevitably determine how great the tigers are!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

According to the humans, they have beaten #12 and #19

Dec 15, 2008, 9:50 PM [ in reply to Re: Clemson Basketball #1 in Latest RPI Calculations ]

Notre Dame by 16 pts and Michigan State by 35 points. Oh, and both were on neutral courts.

It's nice you understood the article, but anybody who watches college basketball knows who the best team is right now.

Dec 15, 2008, 11:51 PM [ in reply to According to the humans, they have beaten #12 and #19 ]

no doubt. unc is by far the best team in the country;
the point of the rpi (which plays a major factor in tournament seeding in march) is to show who has performed best against the toughest schedule.

Clemson: 10-0 against #5 toughest schedule
UNC: 8-0 against #117 toughest schedule

http://www.realtimerpi.com/rpi_Men.html

skill players aside, which team looks like the #1 rpi?
