I would bet that over half of the professional athletes in

May 3, 2006, 8:07 AM

this country have either a drug problem, a gambling problem, or a marital problem. ####, take the professional athlete part out and I bet it's still true. So what? John Daly doesn't shroud his life in secrecy. He's admittedly no different than most of us would be if we had millions of dollars dumped at our doorstep. He's a regular guy, you'll never find him being an ######## to any of his fans, and he's unapologetic about his flaws. I think that is pretty endearing.

Good luck to all you guys that judge him and pretend like you're better. Let me know how that goes for you.

I agree.

Maybe most golf fans just aren't as judgemental about other folk's personal problems as you are, Mickey.

But the opportunity to have millions of dollars

May 3, 2006, 9:04 AM [ in reply to I would bet that over half of the professional athletes in ]

apparently is lost on some people. He's not talking about $5000, but FIFTY MILLION dollars. I don't find him endearing at all, either. Lots of people have problems, me included. But I never let it get in the way of my job. Daly has. And I know for a fact $50 million is not something he can afford to lose. He would be retired now if he had that money. He gave up drinking because it was a problem for him. Does that not make sense to anyone? I don't hate him, but I don't love him just because he has problems. Do you love everybody in the world, since they all have problems? I highly doubt it.

The way I look at it...

May 5, 2006, 10:51 AM

It's his money...he can flush it down the toilet and I wouldn't give a ####. It's his prerogative. Do I agree? No. Would I do the same? No. Can he do it? Yes. Do I care? No.

I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.

you are right. but if he's so "everyguy", wouldn't he

May 6, 2006, 6:25 AM

realize how stupid what he does is? I totally agree with you, though. I mean, I have never bee close to being wealthy and will probably never be, but if he is the average joe he portrays, you hope he would feel the same way.

And then that brings the question, did the money change him or was he always that way? Some say the competitive spirit that causes all athletes to be amazing successes can be their undoing as well.

I don't know. From the outside, as a poor sap, I am jealous, and I am also confused by his apparent lack of reason. I guess that would be addiction I'm seeing, right?

Not really! Alot of people on message boards, especially

May 3, 2006, 11:50 AM

this one are quick to judge people and think they're better than them. My boss spent several hours w/ JD recently at the Monday after the Masters in Myrtle Beach and said he seemed like one of the happiest men alive. Not many people can say that about themselves. Whether it be his gambling, drinking or meds, who cares, he's his own man, he's happy, let him be!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well...I'm not pretending that I don't have a marital

May 6, 2006, 7:06 AM [ in reply to I would bet that over half of the professional athletes in ]

problem, I'm not pretending I don't have a gambling problem, and I'm not pretending I don't have a drinking problem. I really don't have any of those and if I think it's stupid for someone to have one of the above problems, much less all three, I'll #### well say so if I feel like it...what you and others think be ######.

It's one thing to be unapologetic about ones flaws...I agree that CAN be endearing. However...I'm not sure if losing 60 million dollars, being an alcoholic and a bad husband qualifies as "pretty endearing". If I had millions of dollars dumped at my doorstep...I sure as hell would not be like JD...knock yourself out if he is your role model.

Frankly....not having a drug/alcohol problem, being a good husband, and not gambling away my salary DOES make me a better person than JD in many respects....so thanks for the good luck wishes and it's going pretty well.

May 3, 2006, 9:34 AM

Did you really just admit that you would blow 50-60 million dollars if you had it?

I think the same people that support John Daly are the same people you see on the show COPS and ride their bikes to Myrtle Beach. That crap has no place in the sport of golf....John Daly is a loser.

Re: That could be the DUMBEST response I have ever read.

May 3, 2006, 9:48 AM

And exactly what does the fact that someone who rides their bike to Myrtle Beach (and I'm one who does)have on whether or not you support Daly (which I don't)? A bit of sterotyping here maybe? Come on!!

It is not weather you make a mistake it is how you handle it afterwards. John Daly has always been willing to admit his mistakes in spite of how others might react including lucrative sponsors. People relate to the fact that here is a guy that is Joe Q Public but yet he is walking in between the ropes of Augusta. We all have the black sheep uncle that drinks a little too much and maybe he never really capitalized in the business world but he always has a good off color joke or wild story to tell you after thanksgiving dinner. He is the same one your Mother rolls her eyes at all his comments but yet all the cousins seem to gravitate towards…in short John Daly is affable. He is the classic underachiever that won 2 majors.

Having had the opportunity to meet John on several occasions I can tell you the guys talent is exceeded only by the size of his heart.

I agree but here is how Daly plans to respond according to the ESPN.com article:

Daly says he has taken more control of his life in the last six years.

"I'm off those ... medications. I don't drink JD [Jack Daniel's] anymore. I don't beat up on hotel rooms and cars as much. Only gambling remains a problem," he wrote.

He said he plans to start at the $25 slots in the casinos and set a "walkout loss number," which would tell him it's time to leave.

"If I make a little bit, then maybe I move up to the $100 slots or the $500 slots, or maybe I take it to the blackjack table," he wrote. "It's their money. Why not give it a shot, try to double it? And if I make a lot, I can ...

"Well, that's my plan," he wrote.

BTW-I had to give Daly a ride to the airport when I worked in Hilton Head and thought he was a great guy.

One quick note:

I said this before but will repeat it. When I was approached about the blog I envisioned this kind of healthy discussion. I like reading your opinions on these subjects. For the most part they are education and enlightening. Thanks for your opinions on these issues.
