Re: FB Update: UCLA QB takes a jab at Clemson's academics

I don't think he is taking a jab at Clemson's academics, he is correct. It would be much easier to graduate in 3 years with a sociology degree than say, a math degree.

He complimented Watson and Scott on their accomplishment as well.

The way I read it, he only mentioned CLEMSON because he was talking about DW4 and Scott. IMO - he implied nothing. We can disagree on that.

Took me five years to graduate CU in Chemistry, BS and that included some summers. What our football player graduates did in three years at CU regardless of the major was hard. No one can dis their time management and drive. I don't think a degree in underwater basket weaving is offered at CU. I've been to the UCLA campus. Was not that impressed. They have some off the wall, touchy, freely degrees that would be at home in Cootlumbia.

This is a slanted article using GSR for team members, not the rigor of the universities as a whole. The tip off there is NO way Bama academically ranks above most of the schools in that list, especially not UF, USC, and Michigan.

As far as the kid from UCLA, I'd say Clemson helped DW4 become quite gainfully employed in a career he loves. I wish the young man from UCLA the best too, but not so sure the odds are in his favor. Methinks he should shut up and hit those books.

I get what you're saying, but as an academic institution UCLA is a ways ahead of Clemson. Yea, Rosen comes off poorly because based on your ranking, not all of his teammates are taking academics as he may...but overall UCLA is generally considered to be one of the top institutions in the nation--borderline elite--while Clemson isn't.

Where he's wrong is...

Aug 8, 2017, 12:58 PM

Football and school can go together. Some institutions can be good at both where others cannot. Clemson just happens to be one that can.

Deshaun and Artavis can go back and get their Master's just like he can because they have their degrees. It doesn't take an MBA to start a business or own the world, but if you can't handle the capacity of two full time jobs then owning a business might not be the best option for this young man.

No smoking go on comments referring to Watson and Scott. He's dead wrong on his assertion that academics and football don't go together. That's why you're in college as an athlete. To do both. It's also a slam against the many athletes that do them both well enough to get a degree with the hope they'll make the NFL. That part of his comments sounded like whining and a condemnation of other athletes who only wanted a path to the NFL, imo.

Article has inaccurate statistics in comparing average SAT scores between Clemson and ucla.

Among the three schools mentioned in the article, UCLA has the highest average SAT requirement for potential students at 1750, much higher than Alabama's 1190 and Clemson's 1250.

Clemson is above 1300 and is based on a 1600 scale.

UCLA has to be based on the 2400 scale. On a 1600 scale per google, ucla is in the 1300's.

Liberal west coast bias.

He told me many times that football, studying and the military cadet requirements at Clemson were nearly impossible to accomplish. One thing though. Getting an MBA

Aug 8, 2017, 2:24 PM

When I got my MBA I was fortunate - I went to school full time. But there were plenty of folks balancing full time demanding jobs often involving travel and families and going to school - all at the same time. He certainly doesn't have the stress that most have with work and school - his housing is taken care of, his meals are prepared, and it's not costing him a dime. It's too bad that he would rather complain than see himself as a role model, which he easily could be.

And I don't care what kind of degree one earns - when it's done a year early, that takes commitment and work.

Aug 8, 2017, 2:58 PM

He started a truth: some schools are easier than others, and some majors are harder than others. And UCLA is considered one of the very top schools academically. But he didn't take a jab at Clemson.

Another truth is that SEC schools academic minimum requirements are significantly lower than the ACC, so there are likely athletes in those schools that could not make it into ACC schools, or PAC 12 schools. I think it was more a jab at Alabama.

Aug 8, 2017, 5:36 PM

He's right about certain majors being more conducive to graduating early. That isn't unique to Clemson. It's true at all other schools as well, including UCLA.

A really good example of this easy path to early graduation is Duke. They usher all of their basketball players toward a sociology major, because it is an easier subject matter and also only 90 hours to graduate. Clemson has no majors with only 90 hours for graduation.

Clemson is a very good school, and if this UCLA QB doesn't know that then that's his problem.

He has a 20 hour wk for football, maybe throw in 20 more hours on his own that he does, and then he has tutors to hand-feed him. Re: FB Update: UCLA QB takes a jab at Clemson's academics

Aug 9, 2017, 10:38 AM

Re Rosen's intimation re Clemson academics: in 1966, when I was a registering freshman, there was a class meeting with Dean Walter Cox who stated: "Look at the person on your right. Then look at the person on your left. At the end of first semester, only one of you will still be here at Clemson."
At that time, there were no crip courses for athletes. Some took a major called RPA(recreation and parks administration) and even that was not an easy major. However, most were in engineering, industrial management, or other difficult majors. In the mid 60's, Clemson being a state school, had to accept many poorly prepared freshman from smaller SC high schools, many of which had no guidance counselors. Attempting to choose an easier major, many of these incoming freshman chose industrial management(IM) which they felt was the closest thing that Clemson offered to the nonexistent major at that time of business administration. Unfortunately for them IM required calculus, for which very few SC high schools offered sufficient preparation. Thus the high failure/drop out rate during the first semester. At least in the mid 60's, I can proudly state from my 4 year experience that the academic level at Clemson was definitely quite challenging for all students.

Re: FB Update: UCLA QB takes a jab at Clemson's academics

"What is easy academically for one person might be the hardest struggle for another."

100% Correct.

I doubt Rosen could have made it 4 years in the engineering curriculum at Clemson, but then again I don't think I'd ever make it as an Economics major at UCLA either. Two totally different ways to think.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: UCLA QB takes a jab at Clemson's academics

Aug 12, 2017, 9:28 AM

You probably would have made it at UCLA. I had two friends that attended UCLA during the time I was at Clemson. They didn't find it extremely difficult and from their account of their experience academically there wasn't much difference from my own. A lot of schools are resting on what they use to be when it comes to this school ratings stuff. Actually, most schools even Clemson has watered down the curriculum (less hours required, two academic forgiveness, etc...). Two years ago I took my nephew to orientation at Clemson and was shocked at the changes. I talked to a few professors about the changes and they said most schools have changed their model based on studies from Harvard (I think).

Re: FB Update: UCLA QB takes a jab at Clemson's academics

Aug 10, 2017, 8:35 AM

In my opinion and this is just based on my abilities, a business degree and a MBA is not that hard. Now if he would have said engineering, microbiology, chemistry, math etc...different story. I have a graduate degree in engineering and I took business and sociology courses for easy electives. Another thing is I hate the rap that some of these football players get because during my freshman year when I would attend PEER study hall two of the tutors were actually on the football team and want both were engineering majors and yes one of them FRED did go on to play in the NFL as a O-Lineman for 3 years, so these guys were first string players. People need to stop implying that these guys are just getting by and not doing anything. Kevin Youngblood, my schoolmate and CU WR, is a CIA agent the intellectual bar for becoming one is high. T.Lee another football player and classmate went through electrical engineering degree with me and he busted his hump, it took him being way more organized than I was because you had to plan around being missing a lot to go off and play games so when class our assignments were do that Friday are on a Thursday and you guys had to leave early to play a game Saturday he had to plan way more than that to get that assignment done and turned in our to go in and take and study in advance so you can take the test versus me who was a procrastinator. Just saying some of these guys are really, smart and organized and shouldn't be knocked because they can and some can't. As ask for Rosen as Mickey Pilar said dude you have been injured more than you have been an active player so you should have had plenty of time to focus on your academics, so sit down and be humble.
