Brownell / things I heard yesterday and last night

[22]
Posted: Mar 20, 2017 9:45 AM

We heard yesterday that there was a big meeting of "the suits" and that a decision had been made regarding Brownell. At the time, I was told that a buyout had been negotiated, and that Brad was out the door. Then we all started hearing the rumors last night that Clemson was interested in Will Wade....

I was told that Wade used Clemson as leverage for another deal. That Wade has no interest in returning to Clemson, and views this job as a mid-major in a big conference with zero upside. He wants to follow in Shaka's footsteps and get a "big" job.

Once that was known, things changed in the proverbial landscape and Brad was retained.

Keep in mind, this isn't confirmed, but it's things I have heard from both sides. Seems to make sense.

Thanks David, appreciate you giving it to us straight

But also declining to report on rumor and innuendo. That's what makes Tigernet the best IMO.

so, our esteemed ad had narrowed his choices down to "one" coach??? that is gross incompetence if that is the case

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

All i can say is OUCH. That definitely stings.

Cant say I blame him for viewing it that way

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 9:49 AM

the athletic department has long viewed Clemson basketball as such.

but he's right...

If you want to be viewed and treated like a "big time" program, you need to act like one.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Well when we are offering Wade Mid Major type money what do you expect.

#### we are currently paying CBB Mid Major money and are expecting major results.

Typically the results come before the money.

It wouldn't make any difference if BB was only being paid $63.17 a week. If he accepted that to be the coach at Clemson, I expect him to give 110% at doing the very best coaching job that he can possibly do bc he accepted the job knowing what the job paid!!!

I think he is doing his best .

You know what they say about doing your best , sometimes your best just ain't good enough.

Sigh.

Amen.
A savior Coach wwho I and many onTigernet believes wished would come back to Clemson just dumped on this program. He knows 100x more than anyone here.
Perhaps this will wake Clemson fans up.

We must clean up our mess and build a real foundation in order to be what we want to be in basketball.

Also keep in mind this could be spin in people not wanting

to be accountable for their decisions. There are likely 1,000 different stories on second and third hand conversations.

If Wade thinks his move is to an upper echelon team - whatever he considers as that - I can't necessarily blame him if he achieves it. VCU is a really good job and he might be able to reach a top 20'ish job from there. Or he could flame out before he gets that opportunity. I think the jury is still out on how good he is anyways.

I feel like you are suggesting DRad might have fabricated

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 10:25 AM

the Wade comments and leaked them to defend the decision to keep Brownell. That seems ridiculous though. I can't imagine how that would be in his best interest.

None of what is written by Hood is in DRad's best interest

in my opinion. So you decide to fire a coach, have 1 target, get played by that target and then quickly re-confirm that you're keeping said coach you decided to fire? To me - if that is the case - that's not managing your situation well. At all.

This all sounds like spin, albeit bad spin. Or sources who really don't know what they think they know.

Re: Also keep in mind this could be spin in people not wanting

If he said those things about Clemson, I say that he is a POS, and I would be more than willing to spend a few nights in the slammer for swelling his mouth shut so that nothing comes out of it before the wire is taken out of it!!!

Plausible, but Wade shouldn't have been the only coach we looked at.

For what it's worth I was never really sold on Wade. Seems like VCU has lost a step since Smart left

So it was Wade or nothing?

[1]
Posted: Mar 20, 2017 9:48 AM

Do you know if any other coaches were at least considered or had any interest in the job?

It is quite possible that that is Wade's thoughts....

[3]
Posted: Mar 20, 2017 9:48 AM

But certainly there is SOMEBODY that is an up and comer that would take the job. If the only options we had were retaining BB or hiring Wade, then that is poor leadership.

The "Wade or bust" thing by DRad is a cop out

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 9:55 AM

If that's the case, that's extremely poor leadership on his part. No way you can't tell me that there are many more qualified coaches that wouldn't turn down $1.75 million.

Agreed. That sounds like spin.***

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 9:57 AM

So we had only one target if Brownell was to be fired?

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 9:53 AM

That's not good AD'ing. Will Wade could be great, could be mediocre, but he shouldnt have been the ONLY answer.

Retaining a bad coach who failed in a overrated ACC? Got it!***

Kinda worst case scenario for all involved.

Now Clemson has a coach that knows he is not wanted for another year or two.

No other candidates better than brad ?

Really ?

Pure incompetence

Yeah, I think it was leaked to get LSU to commit to Wade

after the Crean to LSU rumors started up. Of course, not sure why LSU would be seen as a much better job than Clemson.

this website now give TDP all of the credit for the success of the football program and want to run DRad out of town.

The contract extension that TDP gave Bowden was just as bad or worse than the one DRad offered Brownell. We fired TB mid-season a year and a half later and ultimately hired the interim coach, a move that rarely ever works out. In fact, this is probably about the only time in recent memory that it has worked out. Maybe TDP deserves some credit for seeing something in Dabo or maybe he just got lucky. Maybe he went all-in with a bad hand and just sucked out on the river. Either way, it worked out for him and for Clemson and now he suddenly gets all of the credit for our football success. That feels like revisionist history to me.

Well if a Clemson grad thinks of the job that way.........

[1]
Posted: Mar 20, 2017 10:00 AM

what makes people think we could go out and get a big name coach???? Coaches put players in a position to win. Which we were in every game but two. Players have to make plays!!! I think next year will be Brad's best team. The 4 recruits coming in, can play!! Plus you add in David Skara and I see us winning over 20 games next year.

I want what you are smoking...

We lose our best player, our best 3 point shooter and one of our only two big men (and the one who plays the most minutes)...and you think we will be better?

Who is going to coach them?

How is Anthony grant doing at CofC? Our last CofC coach hire seems to be working out.

Re: Well if a Clemson grad thinks of the job that way.........

Word on the street was that Spencer and Hudson could and would play. I'm not looking for freshmen to make much of an impact next year other than a few relief minutes. The only returners with any reasonably decent offensive skills are Mitchell, Reed and Thomas. The rest haven't shown an ability to be the "go to guys" in critical situations or as consistently performing players.

the only good politician is a dead politician.

It makes sense David . Drad was in bad situation. He had a bad coach that needed to be fired but looking at a coach using us as a stepping stone. Im disappointed in Wade because we gave him his start. Ethics in basketball or recruiting? No way! David how many years extension did Drad give Brownell? Does he have conditions that he must meet on the court to save his job next year?

How demotivating for CBB if true.

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 10:35 AM

How excited are you going to be doing a job where you know you are not wanted and were to be fired, except they could not find a replacement so they kept you on. Sounds like a recipe for further decline.

What an absolute ridiculous buyout agreement DRad agreed too.

This is a sad time for Clemson Basketball.

This is true, especially for someone making $$ MILLIONS...

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 10:40 AM

to achieve nothing. Buyout this year, next year... what's the difference? He'll be set to retire with MILLIONS OF $$$$$$$$$ at a young age. He can live in style with MILLIONS in the bank and never look back. Why should he give a rat's #### at this point?

DRad blew it.

Re: How demotivating for CBB if true.

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 3:12 PM

Brownell may not admit it but I'm sure he and Drad are looking over what people are saying. Drad was not willing to pay Wade what he wanted so he was forced to keep Brownell. That's not an endorsement for Brownell. The leash will be short on him.

So, obviously the Clemson program is held in HIGH esteem.***

B.B. Packing. We will be dead last in the ACC either way.
If Wade truly feels that way then he can turn in his ring. I have no use for him as a "tiger". We need someone who believes in themself anyway.

Re: Brownell / things I heard yesterday and last night

Posted: Mar 21, 2017 1:10 PM

My fear is that what Wade said about the Clemson program is what most coaches feel/view the program. the two coaches that most on here look as successes are Rick Barnes who had 1 good recruiting class and OP who, when he left in the middle of the night had run out of quality recruits.

In the HISTORY of the ACC no coach has won more than 59 conference games in their Clemson career. Cliff Ellis was one, and when Brad Brownell wins a conference game next year, he will become the all time leader with 60.

This is the historical state of Clemson Basketball.

Wow. I couldn't figure out why we would ever want Wade or

any other former Clemson assistant. We need to completely cut ties with the past. Now, the really disturbing part of what you reported is how it all went down. That sounds like a complete low-rent way to handle the second largest sport at a huge sports school. That mismanagement would have to fall on "the suits", as you put it. If they couldn't put more into it than what you described, maybe we need some "new suits". As far as I'm concerned the only people in that athletic department that we can not live without are Dabo and his staff and Turnipseed, the soccer coach and staff, and Monte Lee. I included Lee because the team looks good, his recruiting is good and he brought home a conference championship in year one, not to mention won the coot series both of his first two years.

Anybody else over there is completely dispensable, especially the suits.

1) sad to see guy w/ ties to Clemson feel that way about the job. Think we can consider that bridge officially burnt.

2) D Rad & the suits should've had more than one choice. The 'Wade or nothing' thing seems like a cop out. Poorly played on his part.

3) interesting to see how Brownell responds to the knowledge he was on the way out & retained only b/c the other option was a flake. Hope it'll light a fire to get things turned around next season, but could easily just make him phone it in.

This whole situation was a combination of poor administration decisions and the perception of our program. Yes, we have alot of poor history regarding basketball. But to say there's no upside to the job here is ridiculous. Our biggest thing for when we do move on & get a new coach will be getting a coach that'll be basketball's version of Dabo - someone that will believe that you can win @ Clemson, get people to buy in, & most importantly, have the support of the administration. There's no reason that we shouldn't have success on the hardwood. It's time for all parties involved to quit coming up with excuses & start focusing on the task at hand.

Speaking of motivation,

What are Brad's incentive bonuses? Im just hoping they exceed the 3M buyout after next season. Otherwise there really is no reason to light it up.

Imagine a job you make 1.5M for doing your best or 3M just for showing up.

Re: Speaking of motivation,

Posted: Mar 21, 2017 6:45 PM

if it was only a matter of the coach's attitude, every program would be great at basketball.

the issue for CLemson is there are a ton of competitive basketball programs to include private schools and non p5 schools, and Clemson has no advantage over any school for obtaining good recruits.

so simply because Brownell didn't have the W-L record you want, that means he just shows up.

Not even that, I'm just curious because all we hear about

Is the buyout. And with dabo all we hear about are the incentives. Id actually like to know both just out of curiosity
