I live near the arena and the amount of money and excitement this weekend had brought to the downtown area has been awesome! Anybody trying to mess it up needs to go back to their trailer

Serious losers. Surprised they could take time away from the meth lab to stage this protest.

Sure you can as the 2-3 idiots deserve zero coverage but the MSM will overlook the 10K good things about Gville and cover this story

Bunch of dumb fudge idiots making the state look bad. Chance for a good story of progress in SC, with new money and sports tourneys in the state. And yet the only article outside of the games is of these fools.

Interesting is - You failed to mention this part of the story:

"In 2002, the NAACP held a march in downtown Greenville to protest the state flying the flag on Statehouse grounds during the NCAA regionals at the arena."

Out of curiosity, were you okay with THAT protest? Asking for some friends.

1st Amendment rights are only for the majority. Got it.

He's within his 1st amendment right to call them idiots.

I'd suggest the "protesters" read the "Declaration of Immediate Causes which May Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union". This states why SC decided to secede, in the original words of the leaders of the time. This is not spin but rather the actual justification for secession. It's not what granddaddy told them.

Oh - so you are okay with any protest that matches what YOU believe, but not any protests that you are opposed too? Did I get that right?

I guess it's a good thing the BLM Terrorist group did not shoot all of our policemen and policewomen that we had there. But I guess you would approve of that since it matches YOUR beliefs. Amiright?

You sound like a major hypocrite to me. Izzatright too?

So you're now choosing which protests to support?

[3]
Posted: Mar 19, 2017 9:03 PM

Didn't you just make the same hypocritical argument.

Trying not to being political here. I wouldn't want Berkeley protesters, the BLM folks protesting at this event or especially not 'shooting all our policemen'. Way to make a big conclusion jump.

Why can't SC get out of their own way? Focus on the positives of this state. Enjoy the success of hosting an NCAA tourney. But yet again we find away to generate a story that just craps on the citizens of this state.

Go fly the flag. Hang it in your office. Put in on your car. Show off to everybody how you feel. Be proud about it for some reason. That's your right. I bet you don't do it though because you know how embarrassing it is.

You appear to have missed the point, despite pretty clearly summarizing it all in your first sentence:

Yes, he agrees with protestors who share his values. He doesn't agree with protestors he doesn't share values with. He never said these guys should be arrested or not allowed to speak...I'm not sure why you made the jump to suggest he supports silencing anyone who doesn't share his beliefs.

Can't speak for the poster but I agree with others in this thread that are not happy with the protestors. Anything that detracts from the event and makes our state and hometown (for me) look bad is upsetting to me. Especially with what Greenville went through to win the bid and the fact that they've bid on future years as well. This "protest" today certainly doesn't help.

My point at the post was that the guys are idiots who are flying this flag and Greenville and this state fought so hard to get this tournament here. It has been an awesome weekend even as a Tiger fan I do not want see my hometowns reputation tarnished from an other wise great weekend

Why not wave a South Carolina state flag?

[1]
Posted: Mar 19, 2017 7:15 PM

Are these people so depressed with their life, currently, that they have to wave a flag that represents such a small portion of history? Really narrow minded thinking if you ask me...

I never understood the fascination with something that happened in the past anyway. Learn from it, move on. Why not raise a flag from 500 years ago that represents your country's heritage.

Call me crazy, but I don't think these guys are historians looking to make an intelligent commentary. Pretty sure they are just good old fashioned haters who are looking for others to blame for their loser status in life.

Re: Why not wave a South Carolina state flag?

[1]

I for one see nothing wrong with the protest this weekend. I am Veteran and I believe part of my service was to protect the rights of all Americans. Even if we don't all agree on the cause. Their right is to protest. As long as it is peaceful and puts no one in danger, then protest away! For some to put down one groups protest over another is very hypocritical. The tournament being in our state is great. But never allow an event to cloud our judgment about the issues. Remember Tiger fans we traveled to Orlando because the NC governor stood up and said that little boys shouldn't go potty with little girls. He did it regardless of the cost to his state. Don't be so quick to condemn people for expressing their feelings. It's their right!!!

Re: Why not wave a South Carolina state flag?

[2]
Posted: Mar 19, 2017 7:38 PM

Haven't seen anyone say they shouldn't be allowed to protest. No one on her is advocating for the cops to go arrest them.

Being immune from arrest and prosecution is not the same as being immune from criticism. And when you are clearly trying to embarass a state, city and sew division, the criticism is very much deserved.

No hypocrisy. Just exercising our right to free speech which you so bravely defended.

Re: Why not wave a South Carolina state flag?

Posted: Mar 19, 2017 7:49 PM

As was posted earlier in the thread, the naacp was trying to what back in 2002? Can't have it both ways. That is being hypocritical. That's my point about being hypocritical but you will probably ignore that. You don't agree so the others should "go back to their trailers"? Oh and before I'm labeled I a was a Bernie supporter not Trump. I know what coming!!

Re: Why not wave a South Carolina state flag?

Posted: Mar 19, 2017 8:03 PM

I can have it both ways. Both groups have a right to protest. I agree with the message of the first group, disagree with the message of the second. It's just called being able to make reasonable decisions to support or oppose the message of others. Simple.

I'm sure I am wrong about a lot of stuff, but there is nothing hypocritical here.

Re: Why not wave a South Carolina state flag?

Posted: Mar 19, 2017 8:45 PM

That has nothing to do with what happened today. Why bring up something that people have forgot about?

You're just trying to pick a fight. Stop. Nobody is being

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 11:23 AM

hypocritical here. Nobody has said that they don't have the right to protest. Most of us just wish they would stop. It embarrasses some of us that people do these things in our city. That's not hypocritical.

Since you asked, I was against the NAACP protesting 15 years ago. Obviously they had every right to do so, and I fully support that right, but I had a problem with it because they were part of the compromise in 2000 that took the flag off the statehouse...then 2 years later they were protesting/boycotting again. I felt that they should respect the compromise they brokered.

Not condemning. I think the act of the protest is fine.

Posted: Mar 19, 2017 8:02 PM

But what are the really protesting? Do they even know?

Most protestors don't know what they are protesting.

Who are we to try and interpret why someone is doing something? Why do you want to sit back and talk about what a small group is doing in downtown Greenville with a confederate flag? Why would you say that the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate? Just because a small group of people (nazis, skinheads) use it as a symbol of hate. That flag represents the south and southern heritage. It is also used as a symbol for brace men and women who died for the south in the civil war. I guess you would also like to say the Civil War was fought over slavery? A large majority of Southern states joined the war to fight the oppression of the North over taxes for infrastructure and railways amongst other things that did not benefit the southern states. The north used slavery as a tool in the war. Just as the naacp used the confederate flag claiming it as a symbol of hate. Just like liberals are claiming the narrow mindedness of conservatives now. Who is really being narrow minded and not wanting compromise?

Re: I wonder what they hope to accomplish with that nonsense?****

But the South lost. I'm as southern as anybody and love my state and our heritage but it's comical that people actually think it still means something and should still be displayed. It should be in museums and historic sites and that's it.

Re: I wonder what they hope to accomplish with that nonsense?****

Posted: Mar 19, 2017 7:54 PM

Throughout time things change their meaning. Due to the fact many hate groups use the flag, many associate it with hate. It might not be right but it is reality

Who decided that the flag that those men are holding downtown represents the south?

[4]
Posted: Mar 19, 2017 7:56 PM

And who the heck decided that it represents southern heritage? I represent the south and I represent southern heritage every time that I proudly step out and demonstrate myself as an adult who was born, lives in, and raises their children in the south. That flag does not represent anything other than a failed attempt to secede from the United States. Individuals represent their heritage and their beliefs everyday. The flag is nothing more than an image. Currently there are people standing in downtown Greenville demonstrating that no one can keep them from flying that flag. The only problem with their protest is that no one ever told them that they couldn't.

Re: Who decided that the flag that those men are holding downtown represents the south?

Posted: Mar 19, 2017 8:20 PM

That's the problem with those protesting our president and the election results to. They shouldn't be allowed to protest those results either!

Not "allowing" people to protest is extremely un-American.

Posted: Mar 20, 2017 11:50 AM

I think the protests you mention are childlike and unnecessary, but to not "allow" them to do it would be wrong on many levels. Same with the flag guys. As long as they are acting legally they can knock themselves out. It doesn't mean that I'm going to agree and it doesn't mean that I'm going to not say mean things about them.

Not allowing speech that you don't agree with is very dangerous, IMO.

I'm all for protests.

The entire reason for SC's secession, in the words of the leaders of the time and put in print for all to see, was slavery.

I've never owned or flown a Confederate flag, nor will I ever own or fly one. BUT - I do respect those that do, and I respect their RIGHT TO PROTEST. I resent anyone that is such a hypocrite that they can't see but ONE side of something. If it's not what they believe or want, then it's wrong in their opinion. Calling them idiots is wrong - regardless of what you think. What they believe is okay with me. They did not kill any cops, they did not damage any property, they did not harm anyone, nor did they do anything that was not within their RIGHTS to do so. Some groups do those things, but I never hear too many complain about those "terrorists". I guess that is okay by some people's standards.

That said - an AMERICAN flag flies outside my home right now. A CLEMSON flag flew in it's place until after the NCG. Those are the flags I fly. And I STAND when they play our NATIONAL ANTHEM, and I detest those who kneel during that time.

As someone who had ancestors who fought, were wounded, or died under that flag at Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg, I have a point to make here. Yes, there is a "heritage" of our Southern manhood marching off to war under that "glorious flag" and winning battles against the odds, but there is another heritage to that "glorious flag". That "heritage" is those same men dying or maimed, and survivors returning home, sick and damaged, to starving families, burned down houses, failed businesses, ruined fields, and women and children mourning their lost husbands, brothers, sons, and fathers. That is also a "heritage" of that "glorious flag". I believe that flag should be flown over battlefields like Ft. Sumter, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg, etc. and Confederate cemeteries, or heck, fly it in your yard if you want to, that is your right, but to me that flag symbolizes nothing more than death and destruction for a bad idea.

Yes, true of the Revolution, but that was a win. Very few parts of the North were damaged in the Civil War, and again they won. All other American wars have been fought outside our borders.

Re: Idiots

It's called Freedom of speech or expression! You just used it yourself by referring to those 2 or 3 as idiots and assuming they live in a trailer. Do they not have the right for freedom of speech and expression too? Or do they not have rights because they might live in a trailer. By they way do you associate Confederate Flags and Trailer? Is that not a racist statement? And in General what is wrong with living in a trailer?

Every time someone displays a Confederate Flag in the South many people assume it's about racism. Maybe some fly the Confederate Flag because of their Southern Heritage or they lost a relative in the civil war or they feel it's their right as a Free U S Citizen who is guaranteed Freedom of Speech and Expression under The Constitution and The Bill of Rights. It's those documents our country was founded on and we supposedly live by. However, there are those who try to suppress those Rights given under The Constitution and The Bill of Rights because they such accepting, tolerant people until you have a different opinion.

Every race of people no matter their color, black, white, red, etc... has been treated with racism at some point in history. We can find racism in flags, signs, clothing and numerous other items. Do we ban those items too.

People have become so sensitive about words, symbols, and the past when we should be looking to the future and how we can make life better for everyone.

When did we become a society so sensitive and political correct where you have to measure every single word or action so you don't offend someone. It's sad that ONE word or action can damage a persons reputation or even end a persons career or drastically change their life. And I not talking about a crime, you all know what I mean. Words we used in college in the 80's can get you kicked out now. A man can use the same restroom as my daughter but yet we are worried about a few people protesting with a Confederate Flag!

Instead of worrying about 2 or 3 people exercising their Constitutional Rights should we not focus on the morals of our society and the positive things in life. IMO It's great that Greenville is hosting a part of the NCAA Tournament. Greenville has evolved into a great place to host big events where people can come and have a great time because we have some much to offer.

Why make it about 2 or 3 people when there were 4 or 5 thousand people enjoying some great basketball last night. Even if the Gamecocks won. Lol
