Spring Breakdown: Freshman quarterbacks to get a long look
Kelly Bryant and Tucker Israel enrolled early at Clemson in an effort to get a head start on their football careers and both players will battle veteran Nick Schuessler this spring in what should be one of the most-watched battles. What does Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney say about the competition? Full Story » |

Scheuss has the backward pass though. Can the others do that?

Looks like we have 3 great QBs...

Obviously DW is the man, but can any of y'all see us getting into a dual QB system? Maybe not this season, but after DW is gone, I wonder if we'll see a lot of both Bryant and Israel.

If we can keep both QBs at Clemson

It will be a great duel and I can see a 2 QB strategy as an option. But remember Zerrick Cooper isn't far behind, too.
Starting next season we could have 4 highly ranked QBs. If any one or more want to be starters, how do you keep them?
The only downside to top notch recruiting.

I say Tucker Isreal will probably redshirt to get a little bigger. From his highlight tape, the dude has what it takes to be a college qb, but how can you turn your head from Kelly Byrant? The kid is also a stud and if he puts on maybe 10 lbs this offseason he is going to be a quality backup. Go tigers

Other possibility is Bryant still needs a little recovery

time. And Israel just looks ready from the only clips I have seen. Small, yes, but his footwork is really nice. And as a backup he doesn't need to be perfectly ready in a physical sense but more mentally ready. He can build up while being a back up.

amazing job getting all this talent to commit/sign with clemson, more especially with Watson the projected starter for at least the next two seasons. With Watson's injury history someone better be ready.

Which one gets the redhsirt?

Hopefully with Schussler and DW4 at the helm, we are comfortable putting one if not both in the redshirt to secure a few more years after DW4. Love the depth that we have going at multiple positions now though. Can't really complain!

I've also seen Bryant play a couple of times; he's as good as advertised!

Tucker will transfer if he doesn't see a starter position coming after DW4.

Disagree on one point - you always need ready B/U

It should have nothing to do with DW's past injuries as far as coaching and prep. You always want your b/u QBs nipping at the starters' heels, don't you?

Yes, but I doubt if there is a QB in the country who could "nip at Watson's heels" I think he is in a class by himself.

I think that most would love to see that, but I'm sure we want for I hope the next 3 years. Everyday that our Back Ups get of practice, so does Deshaun, and he is future ahead of most QBs....

We have quality competition at QB and every other position. I remember when that really was a dream.

My only concern
Feb 24, 2015, 12:58 PM
|
|
is making sure the staff doesn't repeat the mistake of last year, and put one player ahead of another based largely on loyalty and appreciation for time spent "being ready". No disrespect intended toward Cole, and if Nick can win the #2 job, on the field, based on ability alone, then more power to him. Let's not just bestow it as a reward for past services rendered.

Yeah, I'm not an NFL scout, so I could care less if Israel is only slight taller than Gary Coleman. Tucker is a great player with a strong and accurate arm. I am confient, at some point in his career, he will help us win some games. To what extent he contributes remains to be seen

1 thing for sure -- we need a game ready option right away
Feb 24, 2015, 1:23 PM

nothing against Nick - but we need someone ready to play and be a solid backup.
I hope Watson can stay healthy but we need a good option back there -- and a backup that knows how to extend plays and not be a deer in the headlights sounds pretty good.

Hopefully we don't burn a redshirt in mop up time
Feb 25, 2015, 10:40 AM
|
|
we can list both of them as the #2 on the depth chart for all I care, but please don't just put one of them in while we are up 40 on Wofford so they get some "field time, just in case."
Its not like we have to designate one for a redshirt before the season starts. If they don't play its a redshirt.
