New Story: Superman: Deshaun Watson pays tribute to good friend Cam Newton

Oct 6, 2014, 2:43 PM

Superman: Deshaun Watson pays tribute to good friend Cam Newton

Following his Superman-like flight over a linebacker and into the endzone Saturday against North Carolina St., Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson mimicked Carolina Panther quarterback Cam Newton’s Superman endzone celebration, acting like he was shedding his workday clothes for his Superman outfit. Why does he pay homage to Cam Newton? How often does he hear from Cam? Photo by Joshua S. Kelly / USATODAY Full Story »

Oct 6, 2014, 7:31 PM [ in reply to He's not going to get a penalty for something that small.*** ]

Ref said it was a double cut throat gesture. I think Beasley said it was a Superman shirt-rip gesture. It was across the upper chest, not index-fingers across the throat. Whatever. It was flagged.

So he did a little superman celebration,so what!!?? If he can't have some fun and enjoy what he's doing right now then why even do it? "Act like you've been there", geez..shut up! And so what if his mentor is Cam Newton.. that's who he relates to. He called Steve Fuller and talked to him about his jersey, and he was awesome for doing that, but stop it with this Steve Fuller should be his mentor, what would he have in common with Steve Fuller? The miserable lives some of you must live...

I hope we can celebrate the blessing and the success he is having and the success we are enjoying. Until the refs and the coaches put the brakes on his personal enjoyments. Lets us continue to absorb the good things that have been talked about around the sport world, watched and played over and over again over the media air waves, and what have catchered the attention of the world of college football from the recent performance from the Clemson football program. Just sit back, support, and enjoy, while rolling with the BLESSING.

Continue to do what you do best which is leading the offense and score points. Don't draw attention to yourself with end zone celebration. Ron Cherry is not the only one that will throw a flag. Flag for excess will cost TD that may be needed in close game.

Don't risk a penalty like Allen & Beasley got in recent yrs!

Oct 6, 2014, 7:41 PM [ in reply to i'm not particularly fond of the supermanny thing. ]

Duane Allen got flagged for excessive celebration for saluting the crowd (military section, I think) on military appreciation day after a TD.

Vic Beasley got flagged for a double cut throat slashing gesture after a sack last year-- though I think he said it was a Superman shirt-rip gesture. Whatever it was, to me it looked innocuous.

Neither one deserved to get flagged in my opinion, but they did. Why risk hurting your team with a penalty?

We must continue to enjoy the successes at this position and the great stuff that is happening at an around the qb spot. He made it through a successful high school career with golden numbers. Why not support and continue to let him shine and have fun doing it. Coach DS runs a tight ship and he will stop anything that will hurt, slowdown, or destroy the success the team is having. Jump on board and enjoy the ride. We all have a differents in personalities and characteristics. Lets let D. Watson be DeShaun without any of the off field controversities and personal opinions that will only distract, take away, cloud, and water down these successful moments and any future successfulness. This will come from the oppositions due to all the recent successes, praises, spotlights this program is receiving. Don't give or help the opposition to be successful at their game of disruption and flow stopping antics. Our great coaches got this. Besides, they were the ones who got him to this point=CLEMSON UNIVERSITY. They're not about to let him go backward or fall now. PS. DON'T MESS WITH THE FLOW, LET HIM STICK WITH THE STUFF HE KNOWS.

So let me see if I have your perspective right - if someone wants the players who represent their alma mater to celebrate with his teammates rather than drawing attention to himself (much like CJ Spiller, Nuk Hopkins, or Sammy Watkins among others) then that person is a moron and must "live a miserable life"?

You will likely disagree but the reality is that the name on the front of the jersey is infinitely more important than the name on the back. I am all for celebrating the name on the front; the superman etc do nothing but celebrate the name on the back.

Oct 6, 2014, 6:31 PM [ in reply to Not a fan of this ]

He's played great, there's no doubt about it. I'm excited about the next two-and-a-half years. Every sign points to his being everything we hoped he could be and more. But the kid has started two games. It's way too soon to get cocky. (Any time you get cocky is way too soon in my book.) We sure as heck wouldn't like it if Shameis Winston did it, and he's got a Heisman.

Keep up the great play, young man, and let other people call you Superman. There are plenty of them doing that already.
