Wallace Wade never looked so packed (except when

the Rose Bowl and Bama came)!

Also, Lon Armstrong's son roomed in Johnstone E-6 where I was in the mid-late 80's and is a friend of mine.

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't understand how Duke had that many fans in the

stadium in 1961, yet they can't pack the place last year. The triangle population has exploded since 61.

Duke was a nationally respected football program back then

and basketball had yet to emerge at the same level.

Since then, the situation has completely reversed and a couple of generations of fans have grown up without a connection to Duke football.

probably the last time Wallace Wade was that full***

That was just too cool! Thanks for the memories.

Those are the guys I remember watching as a small child.

Lou Fogle, Lon Armstrong, Joe Parker, Harry Pavilak, etc., etc.

After some really great seasons in the 50's, Clemson was on a long, slow decline by 1961, but we didn't know it then.

Also sort of neat to see Duke when they were a legitimate football school and their hoops traditions were in their infancy.

We don't need no stinking facemasks!

Interesting they used to take the cannon on the road.

Notice the cannon being fired on our first touchdown. Many do it today, but we've been doing it for at least 53 years.

Go Tigers!!!

You bring up a good question

Mar 20, 2014, 4:15 PM

when was the cannon adopted into Clemson football tradition? Anyone?

I think George Bennett was involved in some way.***

Apextiger, Tigers won three straight ACC titles in 65,66 & 67. It was after those years the downward slide began!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know that, but if you know much about the ACC then ...

Mar 21, 2014, 10:33 PM

... you know that ACC titles in the 60s didn't get much recognition. We had some good teams and reasonably good seasons. I'm not trying to put down the accomplishments of those teams, simply trying to lend perspective.

For instance, we had a great team in 1967. One of the most talented Clemson teams ever IMHO.

We were undefeated at 6-0 in the ACC and won the conference title easily, but we were 6-4 overall and lost to Georgia, Alabama, Ga Tech and Auburn.

No bowl and no national ranking. This was a big decline from the fairly regular Orange, Sugar, Gator, and Bluebonnet Bowls of the 50's.

We won the ACC several times in the 60s, but we never went to a bowl, never won more than 6 games in any season and ... we were indeed on that long slow downward spiral that wouldn't really end until 1977.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We had blown coverages for wide open passing TDs in '61?

So it's not a new thing then.
