If the Vandy coach can get looks from every major program

Dec 3, 2013, 10:03 AM

Then WF could be a good move for Morris. If he went there and quickly got them 8 wins he would set himself up nicely for a $3 million salary somewhere.

If Chad Morris leaves for a low end, Div 1 job at Wake Forest then it's a good indication that Dabo's butt is getting warmer than we think.

I really don't see Chad Morris leaving Clemson for the HC job at WF. All indications are that it would have to be a pretty unique high profile position for him to want to leave a job in an area of the country that he likes and that he wouldn't have the stress and hassle of being the HC.

He makes $1.3MM here and doesn't want his first HC job to be his last. I don't see it. He has DW coming in next year and a big RB. No way he leaves.

Malzahn, who was paid more the Chad as the OC at Auburn, took a paycut to get the HC job at Arkansas State, which proved to be important to him getting the Auburn job. Chad knows this and has probably talked w/ Malzahn. Wake is a much better stepping stone than Arkansas State and he won't have to take a pay cut.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Problem is you said, "Success at Wake."

Dec 3, 2013, 11:01 AM

Malzahn left Auburn because he knew that idiot Chizik was gonna get crapcanned sooner rather than later and if he timed everything right he would be postured to be the returning "saviour" of Auburn. As it turns out - Malzahn played it perfectly. Don't think Chad is in the same boat as Malzahn when he departed for Arkansas State. I would be extremely surprised if Chad went to Wake Forest...

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Problem is you said, "Success at Wake."

Dec 3, 2013, 12:35 PM

Malzahn & Chizik bumped heads and Gus knew he had to try his system on his own to prove his worth, which he did. He was confident in what he was doing even if it meant taking a pay cut. I don't think he imagined the Auburn job would have come opened so quickly. Chad has the same confidence but he won't have to take a pay cut. And I think he'll be successful quickly and may only be in W-S a couple of years. I think there are some other jobs he'd rather have but in the end he'd take Wake.

yeah we want him to leave so we can see how bad out head coach is...then we can pull an auburn and hire our former oc as head coach lol. IDK i think the chad is a great guy but he definitely calls the game like he wants rather than whats working.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Football Update: Chad Morris linked to recent coaching vacancy

Dec 3, 2013, 10:13 AM

Can Wake even pay him what he is making now? I cant see this being a good move. I know James Franklin is getting some looks at Vandy but perception is different in the SEC.

When Vandy does well in the SEC, it means the Vandy coach is brilliant.

When Duke/Wake etc does well in the ACC, it just means the ACC sucks even worse.

Not sure winning 7-8 there will get him the next big offer elsewhere.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No way Morris goes to Wake ...

Dec 3, 2013, 11:06 AM [ in reply to No way Morris goes to Wake ... ]

actually, Chad's scheme needs quick thinkers (smarts) more than pure athletic talent. in fact, NUHN is designed to offset a lack of talent in some positions. otherwise you'd just line up and run your offense like Bama. the QB is the most important player, which i think Chad can find at Wake.

Re: Well....

Dec 7, 2013, 8:56 AM

I agree that he has as good/better options than just about any assistant in the country, but it seems lately that schools are placing a high emphasis on head coaching expirience.

He could do better than wake, but not by much and only if the right job opens up in the right part of the country.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This won't happen. This is not the fancey job he is after.

Dec 3, 2013, 11:20 AM

That's if he is even after another job. He has a cushion position here where he makes a lot of money and all you people are happy with winning 10 games a year and he doesn't even have to beat FSU or South Carolina to keep it. Just as long as he can muster ten wins against garbage teams ya'll are happy. I am so glad that I am among the few tiger fans that see this for what it's worth and not happy with just winning ten games and getting blown out in our big ones.

Chad Morris is not going anywhere this year

Dec 3, 2013, 11:26 AM

1-2 more years until his daughter graduates, then he will choose best available program which won't be Wake-UConn

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The question for Chad is...Does WFU provide an opportunity

Dec 3, 2013, 11:57 AM

to advance his career.

I'm not sure that it does.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why wouldn't Wake offer the chance to advance his career?

Dec 3, 2013, 12:07 PM

He will have the opportunity to show if his skillset can transition as a OC to a HC. The expectations are extremely low so winning 8 games would be successful. If he fails he can always get another gig as an OC.

What does he gain by staying at Clemson? He's already proven as much as he can. Won an ACC championship, had an excellent offense.

If anything with a bit of a rebuilding project next year at Clemson with FSU coming back strong next season, next year could diminish his stock.

If he wants to be a HC, what would be the best conference for him to cut his teeth in? Maybe it's the one in which he is already familiar with all of the competition and where there are fewer roadblocks to an 8 win season.

Yes, it was definitely Chad's fault the defense gave up 70 points.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMO

Dec 3, 2013, 12:32 PM

This board whines all the time that the other ACC schools need to pick it up and make the conference better. Wouldnt this be the chance? How is Wake a dead end job? They are in a major BCS conference, lots of talent in the state, and when Duke is the best team in NC then Wake can definitely move up.

For those of yall who think he is going to get an offer from a top 10 team, here is news for you. Like Franklin, Morris can raise his stock going to to a small team and showing he can make them relative with less talent. Morris was not offered Tennessee, Texas Tech, or NC State last year so this would be a golden oppurtunity. The man wants to be a head coach and the ACC needs good head coaches, it is a good fit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Morris goes to Wake, he will have to ...

Dec 3, 2013, 8:38 PM

... make them relevant in 3 years and then jump. Otherwise he will end up like Jim Grobe.

Every school in the country anticipating a HC change had Grobe near the top of their short list.

In 2006, he won 11 games ... won the ACC ... went to the Orange Bowl!

He reportedly turned down the Nebraska job !!

Yes, he had completely changed the culture at Wake Forest and proved without a doubt that a good coach could overcome the huge number of disadvantages the program has always faced.

Now Wake sucks again. It was all a fantasy.

Grobe made Wake competitive through patience and player development, not recruiting and fancy offensive schemes.

Obviously Grobe had no ambition for a bigger job and he gave everything he had to Wake's long-term success. And even this dedication failed to make Wake Forest a perennial winner.

IMHO, a hot young assistant going to Wake with an eye toward parlaying it into a bigger job will have to do it fast and get out, otherwise he is probably doomed to failure.

And things don't move fast at Wake ... they take time.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wake got a crappy return on their $2.3 mil then.***

Re: Football Update: Chad Morris linked to recent coaching vacancy

Dec 3, 2013, 5:05 PM

Chad Morris is an offensive coach (mind) and a head coaching job is the CEO of the football program. That means his time will be divided between recruiting, planning, budgeting, PR and other task! He will not have time available to think about offensive football! He is better placed as Clemson's OC and should remain there until he wants to "quit" coaching on a daily basis and start managing a program. Money is not everything and you can only spend so much per year! He should coach at Clemson, have fun in developing young men and look for an HC job about 5 years from now!

Don't forget Malzahn - Chad's mentor and former highest-paid coordinator in the country - took more responsibility and less money and exposure to leave Auburn OC for Arkansas State's head job. That could entice Chad to think he could do the same, go to Wake now and come back in a couple of years as HC if Dabo sinks without him.
Doubtful, but food for thought.
