I have a novel idea

Security cameras.... Should have been done the first time those dirt peckers chipped off a piece.

I was thinking motion-activated automatic weapons, but cameras are good too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Security Camers will only record the crime

Jun 13, 2013, 12:17 AM [ in reply to I have a novel idea ]

Security cameras should had already been in place but that isn't going to stop an idiot from doing what he wants to do. It is only going to record what he is doing. have security along with a security camera or take the rock inside but heck some idiot could probably try and break into the building that houses the rock.

Now maybe if there is a security person watching the cameras at all times and sees the person entering into that area perhaps they could have a security person get there in enough time to stop the vandalism.

Re: Security Camers will only record the crime

Jun 13, 2013, 7:41 AM

All you need is an alarm with a loud, obnoxious sound like a car alarm. It's not like the rock is in the middle of nowhere. If a loud alarm goes off, the idiot(s) will run before they are ID'ed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I thought they had them.

Jun 13, 2013, 2:35 AM [ in reply to I have a novel idea ]

I thought after the last time, this kind of thing should have been taken care of.

(to identify vehicles) along with a motion detector that pings the university police station it all that is needed. $1000 tops.

"Heck, take a miniature version on the road to road games and know that even in hostile environs, they must Protect The Rock."

LOVE that idea!

If we find the busted part, that should be the mini version.***

you can't move the rock...

Jun 13, 2013, 12:21 AM

It needs to stay in the same spot. It just needs better protection.

The rock is a symbol of Clemson, not just Clemson football. How many kids have peered in on it on Friday nights when the stadium is lit, how many couples have had engagement pictures with it, how many graduates have touched it on graduation day, etc...

The rock needs to stay there, the security needs to improve to have the investment equal our concern over it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it can be rebuilt on a movable lock top

We have the opportunity to develop and enhance this tradition: Make it ROTC duty to protect the Rock at all times, and also enlist Tiger Spirit/other service organizations to assist ROTC with food, tour relief whatever. Then someone is there all the time, united in an effort.

Re: Front Page Story: Protect the Rock

Jun 13, 2013, 8:26 AM

They either need not only the acrylic box around it, but maybe some type of heavy duty cage so you can't get to it or deface it with paint. Build a vault that the entire stand is lowered into the ground and then raise the rock before the game. A new tradition -"Raising The Rock" and then they rub it and run the hill. After the Clemson-Carolina game where some of the usc players went and touched the rock-they should have come up with other measures. After killing the tree at Auburn was another sign we needed to protect it.

Why wasn't the box bullet-proof glass?

Jun 13, 2013, 9:20 AM

anybody can break plexiglass.

I also wonder why the CUPD doesn't notice when people break into the stadium since the police department is ATTACHED to the stadium. Were they too busy handing out drinking tickets or stuffing their faces at Waffle House to notice what was going on right outside their window?

When it becomes profitable, I'm sure the CUPD will look into

Jun 13, 2013, 10:28 AM

we've taken more measures and spent more money in protecting field goal post than we have protecting the rock!!! Ripping down the goal post after a monumental win is and now was a great football tradition too. I understand the concern for peoples safety but if you don't want to get hurt then simply get away or here's an idea don't even get close to the goal when people are jumping on it and trying to rip it down. Year after year hundreds of people are hurt running with the Bulls but that doesn't stop thousands from doing it and no one is trying to get that tradition stopped. America is becoming so soft and so #### sensitive to every little thing that offends 1 person. However, I do like the idea of having the rock on a platform that can be lowered under ground and raised before the games. I've been to so many concerts where the singer comes on stage by being raised through the stage on a platform and I could just see it now...our young men sitting in the locker room as they get ready to board the bus for The Hill, and all of a sudden they hear the roar of the 80 thousand plus fans screaming out of control as the rock is raised out of the ground. I for one think that would be pretty cool for it to have it's own entrance!

Ideas on protecting the Rock

Jun 13, 2013, 10:32 AM

One thing I learned while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan is that middle age men aren't the only ones to keep an eye on. Drones don't care how old you are or better yet gender when it looks like they are planting a road side bomb. There is no slap on the wrists for these misguided people. My point is you don't enough fingers on your hands to point fingers at all the possibilities. It could be a rushee for a frat from LSU that's tired of seeing on ESPN how CU embarrassed LSU in the bowl game. Could be a game coot fan who just hates the Tigers. Could be an Ex Clemson student who got kicked out last semester for flunking out. Could even be a Jawja fan wanting to #### off the Tiger Nation. Thing is its just as much as the universities fault as theirs. We need to bar up the Rock in the downtime. There has to be an ornate way of adding bars or some kind of protective structure. I'm sure there can be some visiting hours or some number to call to have escorted access to the Rock. Also add some sort of impact sensor that if busted sirens or horns will go off along with lights shining on it at night. 24 hr security is a waste of time IMO and too expensive. The Rock is worth its weight in gold, lets treat it that way! Matt

I like the idea of

Jun 13, 2013, 11:54 AM

storing it below ground and raising it hydraulically when the buses reach the top of the hill. Once the players have run down the hill, lower it again. I think it would be a pretty neat sight.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We should be careful not to overreact...

Jun 13, 2013, 12:13 PM

Why should the cowardess acts of others infringe on our traditions (freedom)? Now people want to go hide the rock until game day. That's crazy. If we do that, they win. I love the fact that the rock sits as sentry to Death Valley, 24/7. It stares down at that snow covered field in March, and witnesses the first hint of green in the spring. Thousands of visitors have peered through those gates (my children included) during the off-season, and see the rock for what it is - a steadfast symbol of Clemson's door to greatness for those that are willing to step through it. It's a timeless heritage and immovable right of passage to many. Children aspire to and dream of the magic in that rock. Elders view it with pride, thankful to be part of the legacy, knowing it will endure for generations.

Don't move that Rock. Don't cheapen our tradition with some bullshet rock parade or travel-size version. Don't overreact, like the freakin TSA.

Does anyone know for a fact that there wasn't any security cameras? Does anyone know if the case was plexiglass or polycarbonate (big difference)? Does anyone know if there was a motion/heat sensor aimed at the area? Does Williamson Rd have video surveillance around the stadium? I haven't seen any definitive answers to these questions yet, but only much speculation and unfounded/premature outrage over security until we know the facts.

Re: Front Page Story: Protect the Rock

Jun 13, 2013, 3:00 PM

I posted something similar to this earlier on another topic but feel it important to again state my concern about making "Protect the Rock" our slogan for next year. What if it turns out that a camper wanting a souvneir or a frat guy on a dare or some other Clemson related individual is the culprit? I don't want posters all over Clemson saying Protect the Rock and it turn out a Dabo camper wanted a memory of the camp. It would make us look stupid. If we find out a coot is responsible, let's go with the flow but please let's find out who did this before we make that jump.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, we should not rush into things..

Jun 13, 2013, 3:31 PM

At this point, the ONLY thing we know is that the rock requires some security. Video cameras in and around the stadium (If they don't already exist) and a motion sensor (like I have on my flood lights) that would alert campus police that someone was where they shouldn't be, is sufficient. Other than that, the manner in which Clemson Nation should respond should wait until all the facts are known.
