That's the best thing from the interview

You could see that a number of our players were getting past the cut blocks well. It wasn't them that took us out of position on the edge. It's that once again we had two guys taking the QB and leaving the pitch man open. GT will hold the ball to the last millisecond to make them commit then flick it out to the wing man.

The few times we stop the pitch you could see that both defenders understood who had the pitch and who had the QB and Washington could do nothing but tuck and take the hit.

Right! Remind Brent & the D of that next GT game!***

It's very risky, but how do we expect these guys to tackle if we don't run the risk in tackling them in practice. We teach them how to run, throw, catch, block and leave out the most important lessen, tackle. The game is even called tackle Football, but we don't teach that. Hmmmmmm!!! Teach the guys how to live tackle without the game time anger and we should be OK. And make them wear ALL of their protective padding in live practice.

Danny's teams did this ...

Oct 9, 2012, 3:12 PM

Doing it today makes for a news story, but I'm sure it was common back in the day.

Probably it was a little bit less risky back then with many more scholarship players on the squad, but the reasoning for the philosphy hasn't changed.

In almost any endeavor, you play like you practice.

2 cents

IMO, some mistakes look coaching realated as well.
Players are constantly out of position, taking bad
angles. And many times, don't know their assignments.

YET.....

Is guys like Harbison, Brooks and Hobby taking any
credit....probably not.

Of course tacklers love tackling. Tacklees... not so much!

Oct 9, 2012, 5:48 PM

But it's good for everyone. The D just needs tackle (not obliterate) their own teammates. Save the BIG licks for the opponents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Practice was harder than the actual game. Glad 2 hear it!!!

Oct 9, 2012, 6:00 PM

That is the way it is supposed to be. PLEASE CONTINUE!!!!!!
That is how you build toughness & confidence.

Practices in shorts is called a rehearsal.
Might help the Offense with timing and such
but does nothing for the defense

By the way there were shifty RBs back in the day. ex. Stacey Driver or maybe the best ever Barry Sanders

I like Tig...watched him win 4 state wrestling titles...but

Oct 9, 2012, 6:00 PM

I think he is off base on the belief that running backs have somehow changed over time. The notion that back in the day backs did not have shake-and-bake is BS. His comments on "trying to get in front of them to deliver a blow" speaks volumns for our defensive woes. If you're having trouble biting on the shake and the bake while tackling...well you aren't looking at the right thing and therefore have fundamental tackling issues. This is our defensive mentality...wait until the back shakes and bakes us then arm tackle. The only difference is back in the day Clemson would ignore the shake and the bake and knock your freakin block off before you had time to wiggle. They were agile and hostile and attacked. Now we sit back and wait and react tackle.

I agree —ATTACK!!!!!!!!! close the gap before they juke***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree...you'll occasionally miss a few tackles that way...

Oct 9, 2012, 6:11 PM

but I could live with that if we could get rid of the reactive, reaching arm tackles.

You go nowhere without your hips.......you are right about biting on the shake and bake ..... But on the other hand some of these backs will make you look silly.

And lattimore is going to try to run over you Tig......so get ready
