Front Page Story: Sunday night defensive coordinator update

Sunday night defensive coordinator update

Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables and Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney are not at the Clemson basketball game - at least not yet - and word is that Swinney wants to interview former Miami head coach Randy Shannon before making a decision. Full Story »

Good stuff.

Glad to know we'll at least interview Shannon. Still feel like it's going to be Venables, though.

"The rock has strange powers. When you rub it, and run down the hill, the adrenaline flows. It’s the most emotional experience I’ve ever had." -Michael Dean Perry

"If you don't like Clemson, something is wrong with YOU." -Dabo Swinney

I hope it's Shannon.

1. He seems to be fighting for the position. I already like that attitude.

2. He was a head coach. Maybe not the greatest but he's got experience.

3. His defenses when he was the DC at Miami were ranked in the top 10 5 or 6 times.

There is no doubting that Venables would be an awesome hire for Clemson and Dabo. BUT, everything in me tells me that Shannon would be the best hire for Clemson. Shannon knows the recruiting grounds. And Shannon would have an advanage over Venables in Florida 10,000 to 1. Neither coach would be a bad hire. But I believe Shannon would be a better fit for Clemson. Dabo is the one getting the big bucks to make these sort of calls. And hopefully, he will do what is the very best for Clemson. After they are all gone, Clemson will stiil be in Clemson. And I hope that all of our coaches when they leave, will leave Clemson much better than they found it. GOOOOOOO TIGERSSSSSS!!!

We can only hope that when Venables gets back to OK. That Stoops makes Venables an offer that he can't refuse. I mean Venables has been at OK for 13 years. Hopefully he really don't want to move his family clear across country for the same money. And Randy Shannon will be our new DC. Anyway that is what I'm hoping for.

Yes, I really hope Shannon gets this. I've just always liked his attitude.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Does anyone know.....

Jan 16, 2012, 6:30 AM

What Oklahoma's defenses ranked under Venables? Wiki shows Shannon's but not Venables.

Who is the "I" in this story doing the reporting?***

I have two words for the hiring of Shannon "Florida Recruiting".

Re: Good move Dabo.... I believe Shannon is a better hire

Jan 15, 2012, 7:21 PM

Shannon's established recruiting ties in Florida, his consistent record as a defensive coordinator, and his head coaching experience (in the ACC) would give him an edge if it were my decision.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would honestly prefer Randy Shannon.***

You guys dont think their will be an NCAA over hang with him do you? either way good hires IMO what was randy's record vs GT was it good?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Though I won't complain either way.***

Jan 15, 2012, 7:42 PM

he gave up 41 pts vs gt the first try...then 17...then 10. Sounds like he got a handle on them pretty quick.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. That's what a good coach does.***

I wonder about ACC teams having his number, the canes have been average for the most part.

But I agree, Randy Shannon is a solid DC with all those precious ties to Florida.

Knowing dabo prolly working around the clock literally haha

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Stoops won't trust him to be DC, why should we? Another..

Jan 15, 2012, 8:10 PM

...Kevin Steele type hire if you ask me. Randy would be good for recruting as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL. What makes you say Stoops doesn't trust him?

Jan 15, 2012, 8:26 PM

Pretty sure he's been coaching with Stoops for most of his career. The fact that Bob is bringing Mike back doesn't mean he doesn't trust Venables.

agreed. to me it says "my brother is back on the market and he is good enough for me to look out for him"

Jan 15, 2012, 9:47 PM [ in reply to LOL. What makes you say Stoops doesn't trust him? ]

My own opinion is that Bob Stoops wants to bring his brother back to get back to the kind of defense they had before he left. I read somewhere that Venables finished outside the top 50 in defenses in all but one year he was the DC there, and they attributed that to the number of teams in the league that went to the spread offenses. Isn't that basically the same problems we had this year?

If they can land shannon by national signing day, could have a lot of guys like Bullard, Goldman, etc. reconsider. A lot of them were wanting to go to Miami and play for Shannon. Shannon is by far the best hire.

Looks like Coots are going to win the SC recruiting battles every year until we put them back in their place - media hype of SEC has worked for them. We need Shannon to strengthen our FL recruiting base even more - plus he is a hard nosed coach who will not ignore fundamentals! Nothing against Venables but not sure how effective he will be recruiting the SE.

Re: Front Page Story: Sunday night defensive coordinator update

Jan 16, 2012, 9:37 AM

Oh,my goodness. Visor and all. He even looks like a little younger Steele. No one can succeed in the job unless they recruit some talent (including pursuit speed). Kevin had limited talent to work with in 2011,but the team did win 10 games.New system to learn in the spring and fall.Maybe we should just line up and hit people and display a nasty attitude in 2012!
