Tigers offer sophomore linebacker Friday

The Clemson Tigers continued to make a push for linebackers in the 2013 class when they offered Lawrenceville, Ga. linebacker Trey Johnson, a prospect out of Central Gwinnett High School. Full Story »

I'm all for getting the inside track with prospects..

But is it normal to offer college football scholarships to sophomores? Two years is a long time in the life of a teenager. What if he gets injured, or starts hanging out with Stephen Garcia and ends up in jail?

If it's fairly standard practice across the country, and other schools are offering HS sophomores, then I guess we have to get in the mix. Just seems a little premature to me to offer a scholarship to someone who is such a long way from being on the field at Clemson.

It's a reasonable question. He's doing well now, and he's certainly worth keeping an eye on. But IMO it's crazy to offer kids this young. What's next, finding the hottest Pop Warner players and signing them?

If he's looking good with passing grades as a rising senior, yeah, ok. A spphomore? Just too much time and too much more left to prove.

So Cal is offering kids who aren't in high school yet***

I haven't seen a kid that young hold position so well. He looks like he has great vision and ball awareness. That will only get better with coaching and growth. Looks like he's gonna be a stud
