Didn't realize people needed a handbook on proper

Jul 12, 2012, 9:59 PM

hospitality to opposing teams; but, here it is as I see it.

1.Before the game, invite opposing fans to share your tailgate, offer them a cold drink, piece of chicken, and some vinegar pie( my favorite, tmail me for the recipee). Extend the hand of fellowship and offer proper tribute to their team and heritage. As you walk to the game, shake their hand , wish them good luck as you give them a quick wink of the eye, and then say, Go Tigers!

2. Pregame in the stadium, take your hat off for the prayer, National Anthem, and Alma Mater. Cheer as loud as possible when the Tigers run down the hill, and BOOOOOO the opposing team to your fullest when they take the field. ( Forget TDP and his bull about being nice)
3. During the game boo the opposing coach every time he disputes a call. Boo the refs every time they throw a flag on the Tigers. Boo extremely loud when they throw flag that is blatantly wrong on the Tigers. DO NOT BOO opposing teams fans during the game. Do not taunt opposing teams fans during the game. Do not abide being taunted by opposing fans during the game.

4. After the game, if we win, congratulate the opposing fans for a game well played, return to your tailgate and enjoy a post game cold drink. Invite opposing fans that are worthy( you will know who they are). After the game, if we lose, give the opposing teams fans a tip of the hat, and go to your tailgate. ALONE. They can find their own way out.

Pretty simple really. It has been that way at Clemson for the forty plus years I have been going. Don't want to see it change. It is one of the things that makes Clemson special.

Also, UGAy fans. Those three suck. But other than that...

I'll vouch for the vinegar pie.

Spud tmailed me the recipe last year and I made it for a tailgate. Sounds gross but oh so good!

Seriously, I have only seen a couple of instances at Clemson

Jul 12, 2012, 11:30 PM

where opposing fans were abused. One of them I put a stop to. But, I promise you this, last year in Columbia may have been my last. I didn't get directly insulted or provoked, but the opportunity was there for sure. When grown men and women are wearing tshirts that are insulting to Howard's Rock, that have to be explained or otherwise to young boys and girls it is disgusting.

Asking her 12-14 year old daughter, who sounded like a Clemson fan, what she was going to do when he brother brought her some "new" coot diving shirt. A shirt that said something like "Wet ##### dive deeper"....Some teams just have no class.

The definition of awesome!

Agree with all points but one:

Jul 13, 2012, 11:55 AM

I've never enjoyed booing the opponent's on-field entrance, especially these days as most teams attempt to enter the field right when it would be most disruptive to the home team's entrance. I'd much rather just ignore their entrance entirely. Booing to me indicates an active disapproval of their presence or actions, not simply that we don't like them.

As with my last post on this, it doesn't apply to Gamecocks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just feel it would be un American not to boo the other

Jul 13, 2012, 6:35 PM

team as they take the field. If I was them, and the home team applauded me, I swear, I would feel plumb disrespected.

* Had a hard time deciding between, downright disrespected and plumb disrespected. I assume, plumb is the proper version of the slang term.

Applauding them may be a bit too kind...I think intentional apathy is my preferred approach. Although I do see what you mean about the disrespect part.

that I can remember. The only place I have been that compares is VT last year. I've been to several other places all ranged from indifferent to slightly rude. However, my daughters will never visit SCAR and UGA at least until they are adults. Those two places are way beyond classless.

Don't pull a HOKIE after the game....

Jul 13, 2012, 3:47 PM

and leave your trash in the parking lot and steal everything from open bed trucks nearby that is not tied down as was the case in Charlotte after the ACC Championship!!!

Lost respect for the Hokie faithful that day!

I lost respect for them in 2007, when we played their alma mater out of respect, then they cheered like arsehats during ours.

Jul 14, 2012, 12:00 AM

Never wanted to eat something that sounds so disgusting

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree with wishing the other team's fan good luck

Jul 14, 2012, 6:12 AM

It is just insincere and you both know it. I don't do it and don't understand why other people do it.

You both know you don't mean it, so don't even say it.

I will however say I hope you enjoy the game.

I never BOO the other team when they run on the field. It generally coincides with the Tigers Running Down The Hill and takes away from that loudness and pagentry.

But BOO AWAY - it's your right!

I do boo officials and opposing coaches though.

Sounds good. If this was universally adopted a college game would be a pleasure to take a family to.
