In the summer of 1924,

Dec 5, 2018, 11:05 AM

fresh off a farm near Ft. Motte, my dad entered Clemson College. Tuition was less than $400 a year. He was issued a wool dress uniform that was worn for all occasions no matter the season. I imagine that classrooms could have unusual odors.
.
Dad's older brother was on the football team and sat at the training table for meals. Dad said he would have starved that first semester if not for his brother saving a few biscuits for him. Not much fun sitting on the front two inches of his chair.

Dad was there for the infamous food fight. Not sure of the year. Upperclaasmen were sick and tired of beans being served at every meal. They informed the underclassmen that if beans were served again, on a signal all would rise and march out of the mess hall. Sure enough beans were brought to the tables. After grace all stood to march out. Dad said someone tipped over a serving bowl of beans. A different source said someone threw the bowl. A food fight and near riot ensued. Several hundred students were dismissed and Dad, supposedly innocent, never achieved rank after the "incident". He graduated in 1928.

As many of you old timers know, Furman was as big a rival as Carolina in those days. At that time Greenville had public transportation in the form of electric trolley cars/buses. A particular prank when the game was played in Greenville was for Clemson students to somehow disengage the arm from the trolley that attached to the overhead electrical wire, thus disabling the trolley. Surprised that no one got fried.

Dad passed in 1984, a Clemson Tiger to the end!

Thanks for sharing that story. Although not nearly as long ago as that a lot of unusual events happened at dear old Clemson College when it was all male military. Someone should write a book about the antics that took place on this campus. I’ve heard many, many tales of mischief mostly relating to the football games with that ‘other’ school in the state. In the sixties when I had the pleasure of living on this campus there was a lot of strange ‘events’. One in particular that I recall was a young lady being ‘escorted’ in a trunk into the old tin box dorms to live with the lonely cadets. I did not participate in this adventure. I bet there are a few tnetters who can validate this tale.

True story. The student that brought the "lady" on campus planned to conduct a raffle, was discovered and ultimately transferred to the College of Charleston.

My father was 17 when he was one of the very few freshman in 46. Due to the GI's coming back, Clemson accepted very few real freshmen. My dad tells me he was very intimated. Having most of you classes with GI's that still wore fatigues and were in combat just 6 months earlier. I somehow doubt there was much hazing that year. What are you going to do? haze a vet? good way to get hurt. Dad if you're trolling, a few stories would be nice.BTW my grandfather and his father rode a horse and buggy from Newry to put wheat chaff in the cornerstone of Tilman Hall. My dad's 3 older brothers all came back from the war and were Clemson cadets at some point.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

My father-in-law graduated in 1929, wish I'd known to ask him about this food fight. He was on a music scholarship and played in the band, was editor of the Tiger News Paper and often played tennis with friend Hoke Sloan.

Hoke Sloan..now that’s a hundred stories worth right there!

Met him when he had a jewelry store downtown on corner where Subway is now. Big contributor to our Tennis program too.

Bet Joe21 knew Hoke.
