“We have Not done justice for our forest management.”

Sep 16, 2020, 11:36 AM

Quote last week from Calif Gov Gavin Newsome to President TRUMP concerning the reason for so many forest fires.

Their Controlled Burn program has faltered.

From 1999-2017 Calif controlled burned from 4.4 to 11 million acres per year.

In last two cycles including 2020 they have averaged Only 13,000 acres per year.

And nature is controlling the burns for you.

57% of California's forests are federally owned and managed.

State and local governments own 3% and the rest is privately owned.

Sure, but that's a bit off topic.

Those articles relate to logging and construction and not controlled burns and neither makes the management of federal land the state of California's responsibility. Do environmentalists object to controlled burns in the same way as clear cutting?

harvesting is part of forest management, have to build access roads for harvesting, i think tree huggers dont want either

no way that you could or should do controlled burns without access roads either

wood bee asking for it lol

no access roads = no harvesting, no firefighting either, has to burn itself out

when i was younger someone asked me to be a smoke jumper, told them no, safer in the army

An access or logging road makes a great fire break when the rest of the forest is managed.

I wonder why climate change is so severly affecting the west coast states. Canada is not burning and there are many more forest acres there? What year or period in world history had the perfect climate? Just wanted to know so we have a target.

California has had periods of drought in its history that lasted almost 2 hundred years according to geologist. Get over it Governor and start managing your forests!

I think you missed the point.

Ranger does at least bring up relevant points, although I don't think they address the entirety of the problems.

But the majority of forests in California are not managed by the state, they are managed by the federal government.

Sep 16, 2020, 2:06 PM

i think it is an issue of lack of access roads to manage/fight fires effectively

Good luck getting approval to build roads
