Was the UNC game a sign of things to come

Or do we destroy FSU you like we are capable of doing ?

My concern about FSU s that their offense under Briles is

Oct 9, 2019, 8:32 PM

ranked #16 in the country. I have seen them get better each week. I hope we are getting them before that get much better. I don't understand the 27 1/2 spread on this game. I hope it is accurate, but I think this could be another struggle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By “get better”...do you mean they no longer line up facing the wrong direction?***

Where are you looking at? FSU ranked 54th in total offense, 42nd in scoring, and their only bright spot is passing efficiency at 23rd. Rushing is ranked 107.

Clemson is #17, #20... but 52nd in efficiency.

Basically our point spread is betting on "is this the week that our offense makes a statement". The 27.5 would have been a good margin in the playoffs. Snicker.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Total offense and defense are pretty terrible stats

Oct 10, 2019, 8:19 AM

in 2019. On their own they tell little of the overall story and they can be easily skewed by tempo and time of possession. 400 yards on 80 plays is bad while 400 yards on 50 plays is incredibly good. How good a team is at finishing drives is also a huge factor not reflected in total yardage, but is usually incorporated into better metrics.

FSU is 22nd offensively in S&P+ and i believe 44th in ESPN's team efficiencies. S&P+ is play-based while most efficiency rankings are drive-based.

That's still not incredible, but they will be the best offensive team we will have played this season.

Syracuse gave future opponents a blueprint last year and look at what happened to all of them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And how did that Pitt blueprint work in 2016?***

The responses were very questionable about UNC.

I still think possibly there were some inside shenanigans going on during this game. I think we held off the wolves as respect btw Dabo and Mack. This game gives a stepping stone to better!

But owner comes in to listen to music and work in warehouse

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Was the UNC game a sign of things to come

Oct 10, 2019, 11:07 AM

There were no inside shenanigans. Dabo would have beaten UNC by 50 if we had a comfortable lead and could have played back-ups. He certainly would not have told the back-ups to score. That is something a coach on the winning or losing side all understand ..... good friend or not.

Re: Was the UNC game a sign of things to come

Oct 9, 2019, 9:24 PM

If the offensive line doesn’t play better, it’s a sign of things to come. Also the offensive staff has got to put together some better game plans and have better adjustments. No way a team like UNC should control (per the article last week) the intermediate throws, the sideline throws, and take the middle of the field away in the passing game. Something had to be there but they never found it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes.

Oct 9, 2019, 9:29 PM

They're going to definitely lose some more games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

more winning in store for the Tigers.

There’s Nothing wrong with this team!

Oct 9, 2019, 11:41 PM

Nada. ZERO!
I’m tired of people trying to create some controversy when there is none.
We’re better at this point of the season than we were last year. Give it a rest.
If there was something wrong with this team Dabo would have told you. He’s been honest with us about things and when people make stuff up IT PISSES HIM OFF!!!
He’ll let you know if there’s anything wrong, and in the meantime don’t text him at home or keep posting these dumb threads or he might just lose his cool!!!
So, to answer your question, NO!!! There’s Nothing Wrong! ZILCH!!!
Get it!... just watch the next game!

I'm not sure we really are better right now than we

Oct 10, 2019, 8:56 AM [ in reply to There’s Nothing wrong with this team! ]

were at this time last year.

1) Our common opponents were all considerably better last year. A&M is down, and Cuse and GT are wayyy down from a year ago.

2) We took off last year in game 6 beating Wake 63-3 and never looked back. That could happen this weekend against FSU, but it's also possible that it doesn't happen. Reality > potential

3) We had a loaded defensive front full of great players and great leaders to fall back on last year. You knew going into every game that the opposing team wasn't going to be able to run the ball. This defense has been very good so far in 2019, but it still feels a little experimental and the potential for exploitation still seems to be there. With 3 lineman and a little bit shakier tackling than last season, i feel like there's going to be a time somewhere down the road this season where we really struggle to contain the run.

Oct 10, 2019, 11:12 AM [ in reply to There’s Nothing wrong with this team! ]

I guess you have not been listening to the interviews with all of the coaches and all of the players. All of them have said we did not play well and we have to get better. I don't know why people get their panties in a wad when we discuss what is obvious to everyone except them. I think we are going to play better, have a more cohesive offense with better play calling, but that does not discount the fact that the UNC game lacked something. Even Jeff Scott mentioned that we need to look at out tendencies.

Yes Clemson will win all of its games

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

CUs offense had about nine unforced errors in the UNC game

Oct 10, 2019, 7:18 AM

6 illegal procedure/ false start
2 dropped passes
1 non contact trip.

Add in a fumble ... that’s 10 signs non productive plays.
Add in a decent UNC defensive plan and it’s no wonder we struggled.

Clemson’s offense needs to simply execute much better.

On defense, I foresee bad things happening to FSUs QB when he tries to pass.

The Voice of Reason

Oct 10, 2019, 7:36 AM

The biggest problems for us playing it close was indeed the drive killers of an ETN fumble and those cuss inducing false starts.
FSU is going back home with their tails tucked between their legs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The Voice of Reason

Oct 10, 2019, 11:24 AM

Exactly right. In the UNC game it seemed like every time we picked up 6 or 8 yards on first down, the next play was illegal procedure and we were in 2nd and 8 or 9. Then we never seemed to have the right play for 2nd and many times 3rd down. We could never get in a rhythm playing like that.

Yes, it shows the sheep or goats or whatever have made rapid strides since they have Mack back. What it shows about Clemson is that we have a young team who still need to grow and learn. Now it is (past) time to write a W on Sept 28 and turn to October.

Re: This is text book us

Oct 10, 2019, 11:20 AM

What I see is the same thing for the past several years. First third of the season there are multiple players getting to play to try and find the best athletes. The second third, the main players are in place and the more complex offensive plays are installed. The last third the team is firing on all cylinders. This scenario is simplified for this discussion but it seems to be Dabo's mode of operation every year. We start slow and end on a tear. He knows what he's doing.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd like to believe that but.......

Oct 10, 2019, 3:38 PM

this is pretty much the same offense that just won a National Title. It doesn't explain why we can't get higgins or Ross the ball when we need to convert. With our WRs we should be playing pitch and catch. I think we need to look at what we do offensively. Maybe Scout some Oklahoma and some UCF.

I think it is decent game that FSU has some moments but we maintain control throughout the contest.

Clemson 37
FSU 20
