Trend in QB recruiting away from DT?
Oct 13, 2017, 8:11 AM

Just something I was discussing with another Clemson fan that follows recruiting. Since we landed Deshaun and KB, all of our QB recruits have been more of the "pocket passer" with athleticism variety. None are true dual threat QBs with the elite running ability of Kelly and Deshaun. All are very athletic and will definitely make some plays with their feet, but none are going to be the runner that KB is.
Zerrick was listed as a DT QB, but his strength is definitely throwing the ball. Hunter, Chase and Trevor are all pro-style, but are athletic and can make plays in or out of the pocket with their feet.
This trend looks like Jeff/Tony would prefer to run their QB less and feed the RB more. With our improved OL and RB recruiting, this should lead to some dominant, but different, offenses. Should also help to minimize injuries to the QB.
Definitely excited to see another evolution of our offense. I hope Tony and Jeff stay for a very long time.

Deshaun was more of a pocket passer that just had the ability to run. I think Kelly is a true dual threat where he is as dependent on his legs as his arm for success. He needs both to be successful. Deshaun could beat you just standing in the pocket.
Don’t be fooled. Hunter Johnson is no slouch in terms of athleticism and actually scored higher at the Nike Sparq combine than both Deshaun Watson and Cam Newton. We are still getting the same types of guys the coaches just don’t care what some national recruiting sight is labeling them as. We are getting guys that can run our offense

It doesn't matter. Deshaun Watson was not "fast" either.
All the Clemson QB ever needs to do is to extend plays with his legs long enough for our skill guys to get open down field and to run an occasional read option that keeps the defense honest.

That's exactly what I said in my OP. They can run well enough to keep a defense honest, but none of them are the athlete like KB or DW. DW is an elite athlete. He is able to run in the NFL. I'd even say Tajh was a pretty good running threat for short yardage and between the tackles. I just highly doubt the coaches are going to call double digit running plays in a game for Trevor Lawrence.

I played RB and WR as a kid, and what a lot of non players don't get is that half of being a great ball carrier is figuring out the open spaces ahead of you before the defensive players figure out how to close them in pursuit . Masters at this function included Walter Payton and Barry Sanders . You have to be fast , yes ...but vision along with quick assessment and agility are huge .

Agreed with this post and if you haven't yet check out Trevor Lawrence's ability outside the pocket.

What happened to the Chad Morris offense? That offense beat us last Friday.
