This is only the 10th time we have finished in the top 1/3rd of the ACC.

In other words, this has been a successful season.
When the ACC was 8-9 teams, finishing in the top 3 was roughly the top 1/3rd. We did that 6 times during that span (1953-2004).
63-64 8-6 3rd 65-66 8-6 T-3rd 74-75 8-4 T-2nd 76-77 8-4 T-2nd 86-87 10-4 2nd 89-90 10-4 1st
In 2004, the ACC expanded to 11 teams. And in 2005, the ACC expanded to 12 teams, which it had until 2013. Finishing in the the top 1/3rd was roughly a top 4 finish during this time. We did that 2 times during that era.
07-08 10-6 3rd 10-11 9-7 T-4th
In 2013, the ACC expanded to 15 teams. The top 1/3rd corresponds to a top 5 finish. We have done that twice.
17-18 11-7 T-3rd 20-21 10-6 T-5th
Brad has three of these 10 seasons where we have finished in the top third of the conference.
Great job, coaches and players! Let’s win some games next week and go on a run!

those two seasons in the 1960s when we finished third in an 8 team league don’t qualify. I say we count ‘em though, because 10 seasons finishing in the top third sounds a lot better than 8.

I'm still scratching my head about Louisville. I posted earlier we were 6 seed and would play winner of wake game.
Didn't realize it was percentage or number of wins. Congratulations to all the coaches and the team. Not many years with 10 wins and imho, we'd have won the most ever had covid not disrupted our schedule.

Since you don’t want to acknowledge that finishing in the top third of the current ACC is very good, you are trying to change the discussion to something that makes your coot tendencies feel better.
You are a pathetic supporter of this team.

5th place celebrations are a coot tendency - hope that helps. And comparing being in the top 3rd of the 5th best conference in college basketball is not an apples to apples comparison to his predecessors.
You are a pathetic support of Clemson athletics.

let me know where I said any of that? since I didn't, I have no reason to answer the question you asked. I am simply refuting your disingenuous effort to aggrandize a specific coach. Your post history makes clear you have little respect for Clemson's traditions, culture, fans, coaches, or athletes. You are obsessively interested only in propping up a single individual. I look forward to our participation in the NCAA tournament and hope that we can look forward to it with regularity in the future.

I support Clemson basketball, which is bigger than any individual coach or player. I happen to think Brownell is a great coach and will help us achieve new heights at Clemson if he is given consistent support by our administration and fans.
You are welcome to disagree, but even so, trying to minimize this team’s accomplishments is a lame way to do that.
I’m not calling for a celebration or fifth place rings, but simply for our fans to realize what has been accomplished this year and how it ranks in context of our history as a member of the ACC. It’s significant. Obviously we all want more, but that shouldn't prevent us from appreciating the accomplishments along the way.
I, and others, have noticed that you only post when we lose or to criticize. Why is that? Do you not enjoy winning?

The ACC basketball tournament was first played in 1954. Based on your figures, that means Clemson has finished in the top 1/3 10 times out of 67 years (68 years if including 1953 when there was no tournament).

Nothing wrong with having high expectations as long as the investment matches the expectation. Right now our results are exceeding our investment. We do basketball on the cheap end of the pool and frankly our fans support the program when it is convenient. We simply don’t have the passion for basketball that we have for football.

I can agree with that. Given our history I think this has been a great season. I wouldn’t be nearly this optimistic if this was our peak. We have a ton of good players returning next year. Looking forward to this lineup next year.
Honor Dawes Newman (hopefully much improved) Tyson/O-Max Hall
I think we will be better next year despite losing Simms.

That’s tough to say but I don’t believe so. Previously I considered making the tourney a successful season, but I was happy to see Purnell go as I thought we peaked under him. His strategy of recruiting athletes and pressing could only take us so far.
If we peaked at 5th place in the ACC and never really made noise in the tournament then it would get old and it would eventually lead to disappointment.

It sounds like you’re trying to minimize our season.
We finished fifth, period.
We won 10 ACC games, period.
We did this despite a very challenging pandemic season which saw us with not one but two COVID pauses.
The team has done an outstanding job!

5-5 vs the top half of the league, 5-1 vs the bottom half.
And for Viz’s whiner boys who always complain about our record in close games, we were 4-0 in games decided by 5 points or less. 2-0 in one possession games.

I am really excited about our basketball season and the sure success that is soon to come this postseason.
My only worry is that DRad will go TDP/Tommy Bowden 2007 and extend Brads contract after the season. In my opinion, if you have a coach no ones coming after, it’s ridiculous to tie your hands iin case you need to get rid of him next year.

I agree, DRad needs to protect Clemson first and foremost.
[3]

That’s his job.
My hope is that DRad does what it necessary to keep our successful coaches while paying them fairly. I don’t like that contracts today favor coaches so much. We can use Dabo’s contract as an example. The buyout makes it a lot easier for Dabo to leave Clemson than it is for Clemson to part ways with Dabo. I would prefer for it to be more equal, but that’s the reality of coaching contracts today where successful coaches have the leverage.
I would expect that Brad will get an extension after this year at minimum. He has earned that. We will see if a raise and/or restructured contract with a larger buyout happens. I want him paid a fair salary and I want him to stay.
This has been a great year, with postseason success to come, but we have no business locking ourselves into a one-sided contract before we see if this year is a trend or an anomaly.
