The new fair-catch rule on kickoffs...

Apr 16, 2018, 2:56 PM

(If you fair-catch a kickoff inside the 25, it comes out to the 25, instead of where you caught it.)

I wonder if we'll see a lot of teams fair catch legitimate kickoffs on the 3-yard-line - just to go ahead and get it on the 25?

We used to kick it short to try to stop them before the 25 yard line. I think the strategy moves to just kicking it out of the endzone to not give them the option to run it. There's more risk in kicking it short now than reward.

Where is this a rule...

Yeah from my understanding it is official and is on the ESPN website I believe.

Unless the returner is a really, really dynamic playmaker or

Apr 16, 2018, 3:12 PM

the team has a specific reason to return it (ie losing really late in the game), pretty much all kickoffs should be fair caught now. Maybe if the kickoff is a low line drive right at the returner it might be worth returning, but far too many returns just don't make it out past the 25.

Guys bring it out of the front of the endzone all the time on kickoffs. I don't see too many people fair-catching the ball in front of the endzone, but we shall see. I could see it on a really high kick, or vs a good kickoff defending team, or when a team is overmatched (think FCS opponent).

I think most guys returning kicks at least think of themselves as dynamic playmakers, and will be too proud to call for a fair catch. Just my opinion though, we'll see what happens.

That’s a bad rule

Apr 16, 2018, 3:28 PM

It’s going to leak into punt return rules before you know it.

Punts have been exempt from all of the other rule changes

Apr 16, 2018, 3:31 PM

I don't think punts are as dangerous as kickoffs.
