Swinney says if Bryant and Lawrence are even, the senior will get the nod

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney hasn’t been shy when it comes to talking about the Tigers’ quarterback situation, but he took it a step further Thursday when he told ESPN that freshman Trevor Lawrence has to be better than Kelly Bryant in fall camp in order to earn the job.

Kb didn’t either. Stoudt maybe would had if he had the talent around him that we have now and would have been coached up all year by Streeter.

I'm amused when I read how KB "led" us to the N/C playoffs. I think you can make a case that KB was carried along by a great team. I like KB, and believe he is a great running back. But isn't he sixth in passing efficiency in the ACC? And the Spring game doesn't count? Huh?? He and TL were both playing against what we are told are some of the best defensive players in the nation. What I saw was KB's second straight flop, and his first flop when compared to TL who, freshman that he is, tore up the track. I don't have a dog in this race, but I have two eyes and they tell me that TL could well be the greatest QB ever to play at Clemson. Do I trust our coaches to play the best QB? Probably not. Hope I'm wrong! Taking a different tack, what about Etienne!! Hope our OL shows up.

Not sure about 2.0. Kelly Briant has won every game he’s ever started and finished outside of the playoff, and that was against Bama. I say start Bryant regardless. Give the young buck a few games to get used to the atmosphere

First off, learn to spell his name. Didn't the "young buck" have an entire season (plus a terrible bowl game) to get his feet on the ground?? This isn't his first rodeo. He should have had every possible advantage going into the Spring game against a true freshman, and how did that turn out for him? TL ate him up. So, what now??

Actually, he said the exact opposite. He said Kelly will be the starter only IF he's beating or is even with Trevor by end of fall camp....if he is neither, he'll be holding the clipboard come September.

And there you have it folks....straight from Dabo that Bryant does not have the starting spot locked in already. He has "the nod" coming out of the spring, but he still has to earn it through the fall...IF Trevor is better, Trevor will get the nod, if Trevor isn't, Kelly will, if they are even, the more experience gets the nod. But in that he does NOT say "Kelly is our starter for game 1" "Kelly is our guy regardless what happens in the fall"....if that's what you read out of this, you aren't comprehending too well (some of you above).

Now, let's look forward to seeing how the competition shakes out in the fall, and let's see if Kelly improves on his downfield passing and his passing consistency to hold Trevor off. If he does, it'll show in the games. if he doesn't, that will show in the games and Trevor might not start the season, but he will be made the starter if he's beating him out in front of everyone on National TV.

So enjoy the ride...should be a fun one to watch.

So there it is bc, when it comes to grading how much college experience that TL has compared to the college experience that KB has, it's going to be KB's job if everything is about equal. I have made this exact same statement ever since Dabo became our HC, he is partial to his seniors when it come down to who plays and who don't in high level skill positions. Nobody can say that he is wrong bc none of us fans are at every practice, nor do we have the keys to the film room. If TL is actually better, he will have to wait until KB makes a crucial mistake in a game before TL will have the chance to prove in the public eyes that he is the better QB. The best thing we all can do, is stop the bickering and just wait and see bc KB will have to make a game changing mistake before we see TL as a starter!!! These are my last words about this non QB controversy bc there isn't one until Dabo says there is!!!

He's partial to game experience when things are equal...which makes sense at the start of the year. IMO, the real "bias" doesn't come into play until you quite literally see one just failing over and over and they don't give the other guy the chance as early as it should come....or you see the non-starter clearly outperforming time and time again, yet they still keep in the "seniority". To me, it's not about seniority before the freshman has taken a snap, it's about game experience then. Once he gets some experience, then it can be viewed that way.

He also never said Kelly had to make a mistake.. He said Trevor just had to flat out be better and beat him. That does not mean Kelly has to be bad, it just means Trevor has to be that much better than whatever he grades like, good or bad.

You don't have to make a "crucial mistake" to be very average or mediocre as a QB. A number of "game managers" have succeeded at the position when they had a great team to support them. But these guys will never really take over a game or be the crucial difference in the outcome of a game such as great QBs frequently do. IMHO, KB can probably get us by until we come up against a fast, mobile defense such as Alabama's. Then they will crowd the LOS and dare him to throw downfield as "Bama" did. And then they will plant him when he tries to run. Game over.

That's fine with me.

I just don't want to hear 6 months of "we can win with any of these guys" when we really don't mean it; when an injured starter can insert himself into the starting lineup at gametime because even at 50% he's 'better han his backup'; when even Dabo offers prayers of thanksgiving that the starter is so sacrificial as to play when hurt to prevent the inevitable loss we would suffer if someone else started; only to have said starter get knocked out and we lose anyway without our backups having played in a situation where they could have succeeded.

But Dabo has always been passive when injured players want to play. He's old skool like that.

A QB's prep to start is far different than coming off the bench in a 'rescue' operation. Some are good relief pitchers; some aren't. I actually think that was part of KB's problem in the spring game. The defense was already flying around while he was getting up to game speed.

I get that, and I agree with the philosophy. I just want a really honest evaluation. We saw that play out once before with the guy who, "gave us the best chance to win" (but really didn't), and after the experiment failed and a loss at FSU in a game we should have won, the best player finally got the nod. I just want the best player to be the guy.

If they are even, why would you want a true freshman to start the season? In this scenario, leave KB as the starter, get 3 or 4 series, then TL come in for 2 or 3 so he isn't overwhelmed. Let TL show on the field he is better. At least then, its against live competition (where all aspects of the QB's abilities...throwing AND running...are showcased) instead of 2-hand touch on the QB's. If the offense is rolling better with TL, hand him the keys. If the offense is rolling with KB, leave him be and bring TL in for a change of pace.

All that "anybody can earn the job" stuff is just coach speak. Kelly Bryant will start the first two games (guaranteed) but eventually lose the spot to a more talented Trevor Lawrence. I think both QB's will get opportunities at Texas A&M and their performances in that game will determine who gets the start going forward.

Alright, I hear what he’s saying about being equal, practice matters but I guess spring game scrimmage didn’t matter but hey. I’d like to know what does matter, what would make TL better? If you’re going to run the same offense you ran last year then why wouldn’t KB be better????

Now, if you’re going to base it on what Dabo and all the other coaches have said they wanted to do different from last year was get back to hunh and stretch the field DW4 offense, it actually might be a good competition which imo TL would be clearly better simply based on what all the coaches have said to this point... that TL has done wow stuff. Quote- “don’t know if we’ve ever had a QB that’s as comfortable in the pocket as TL “.

So imo what offense we say we want to run and what offense we actually run will determine who Dabo wants as the starter.

I’m All In but how disappointing would it be to lose a game or two when we could have taken a gamble on another QB.

KB has to be a better at option read this year as well as downfield passing game. I know the receivers wanna stretch the field but KB hasn't proved he can do that against elite defenses.
IMO he is an adequate QB but he hasn't shown he can beat you with his arm. I hope he proves me wrong in every way but after 4 years in the system completing downfield passes should be so much easier. He seems to lock into 1 receiver without looking elsewhere. He had way too many carries for a QB last year. I think at Texas A&M we will need a downfield passing game to open up the run. They will stack the box and make KB beat them. Bama gave the blueprint for beating us with KB.

Totally agree and I really think he will and probably should start Furman game but the thing is just like kent st he’ll look like a world beater against them. Any three of our qb’s will. It’s when we get into tough competition like a atm... and jumbos going to do anything and everything to try and win. He knows this IS his defining win this year, so we’re going to have to play a game like no other to win and perhaps score a few points.

I know TL hasn’t had a college snap yet but my goodness, it’s unreal what he could possibly do. He’ll look good at Furman game and everyone Will say it’s just Furman. I guess I’m just selfish and want to see TL perform 3 years instead of two.

Wouldn't be surprised to see this play out like RB last Fall. Going into Kent State, the word came out that "CJ Fuller gives us the best chance to win" and he started that game and scored the first touchdown of the season. As I recall, the depth chart coming out of Fall Camp was 1)Fuller 2) Choice 3)Feaster 4)Some youngster from Louisiana. By mid season, that list had completely inverted with Feaster and Etienne getting the bulk of the load and Fuller getting a few carries here and there.

The spring game rules hurt KB (by taking his feet away) and helped TL (by keeping him from getting flattened by Christian Wilkins and friends). Both QBs have had good practices and not-so-good practices.

We did need more against Bama: An OL that at least tried to block, RBs who could pick up the pass rush, WRs who could hang on to the ball, a half-decent threat at TE, and to not have our best deep threat get hurt in the 1st quarter. It was a team loss on the offensive side of the ball.

I don't think the coaching staff want to put all of their eggs into a freshman QB basket. Play both for the first few games and then you can decide. Bryant can even redshirt and come back next year at a different position if Lawrence wins the staring job before the 5th game.

At this point,if you think KB should start you're a Gamecock

Out defense is the best and they will give TL some breathing room to make mistakes but mark my words.

TL will win the National Championship with this defense. He is the one that can get it done. Not KB. KB will wear our defense out. TL will keep them on the sidelines and well rested.
