TNET: Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special

Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special

According to members of Alabama's defense, Clemson's offense wasn't hard to defend during Monday's National Championship Game, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence's success was a byproduct of having great receivers. Photo by Matthew Emmons / USATODAY Full Story »

Ask Isaiah Buggs! One of my lasting memories of this game will be Travis Etienne’s long run on the last drive ( just under 9 minutes left in the game). Travis went around the left side past a half-hearted attempt by Buggs and the screen shot of #9 making yards and #49 jogging behind is priceless. Not sure if Buggs was feeling fatigue or simply disheartened. Either way, he chased like he knew it was futile!

Go Tigers!

I saw this and had to post. Pissed me off. I thought the same thing (next year, 75 points and we should have scored that last touchdown). This just shows the difference between the kind of players Dabo recruits and the kind that Saban recruits and the development that happens at Clemson. Our players know how to win and how to lose with grace. This guy is clueless.

I find it hard to believe, but I suppose he thinks all of Alabama's wins were against teams who played a flawless game. I suspect Clemson's offense and defense had something to do with those mental lapses by the Alabama players. Looking only at star rankings, Alabama definitely had the edge. Looking at the intangibles, Clemson was and is the clear leader.

SEC LOSS!

Btw, Jason Written on ESPN's Monday Night Film Room said, 'Dabo says his receivers are taught to go the first six yards like you want to win. After that you turn and it' your responsibility to find the ball and catch it.'

If you consider that, it isn't as if our receivers weren't doing anything in the game they hadn't practiced all year. Evidently Williams isn't around when receivers are practicing.

Re: TNET: Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special

Jan 9, 2019, 7:17 AM

What Mr.Williams,( and I use that term lightly)fails to realize is that his comments are a "direct" indictment of just how poor the Bama Defensive Coaching Staff was. After all, the plays and schemes they employed against our offense were put in place by the Defensive Coaches, who failed miserably in developing a plan to get to Trevor.
It also tells me that their offense was nothing special either.
But I sure do love their "Special Teams "Coach.

4 of his 6 national championships came in the BCS era.

Jan 9, 2019, 8:43 AM

The BCS so poorly matched two teams to play in the 'Mythical National Championship Game,' that the game was coined as the mythical national championship. Media voters would undeservedly rank many of the best teams down in the 20s while they ranked their favorite team #1 to foul the polls. Check the Bama/ND championship game. ESPN was one of the culprits in this scheme. That's when the SEC became the 'dominate,' conference along with the newly formed SEC Network.

Thanks ESPN, if not for you we'd have no playoff and would never have fairly crowned the true national champions.

Two thoughts on Quinnen Williams comments:

First, Quinnen didn't get close enough to Trevor Lawrence during the game to actually see how good Trevor is.

Second, when Saban went for it on fourth down in the secomd quarter from his own 20 yard line,
he new his defense wasn't going to be able to stop Trevor & the tiger offense. Saban new how good Trevor & the Clemson offense was/is.

What a bunch of crybabies.

Clemson beat the stuffing out of Alabama.
Georgia lost to Texas in the Sugar Bowl and it was not as close as the final score indicated.
Mississippi State lost to Iowa. Say that over again in your mind. Iowa, they lost to Iowa. The Hawkeyes are horrible.
South Carolina didn't get beat by a weak Virginia, they got crushed, 28-0.
Missouri lost to Oklahoma State.
Vandy lost to Baylor. Yes, Baylor.

LSU beat UCF, but UCF was missing their best player and a blind man could have seen this coming. It was a set up.
Auburn got the easiest set up of all, Purdue. The Boilermakers were 6-6 and lost to a directional Michigan school. Set up.
The Aggies also got a weak team in NC State.

I will only give Florida credit for beating anyone decent and Michigan was without several starters who chose to sit out the bowl game.

SEC!!!! SEC!!!!! SEC!!!!!!

What a bunch of overrated girlie boys.

Oh, and not one person mentioned, that I am aware of, the targeting on Trevor on one of his running plays. It was a clear cheap shot and the guy should have been ejected and he wasn't. Oh well, I'm glad to beat their best.

Re: TNET: Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special

Jan 9, 2019, 9:33 AM

It was clear that they were nothing special. That's what frustrated me so much. What they were is motivated and prepared and Bama was not. All Lawrence did was throw high so the taller recievers could outjump the shorter DB's. It was a successful plan even though he threw a lot of bad balls even with no pressure on him and ended up with a worse completion percentage than Tua. But the other thing that helped him was the totally incompetant play of the DB's and that there was never an adjustment made the entire game. I don't know if they all had brain farts, or the stupid inexperienced DC, Lupoi planned it that way, but on most of Lawrence's completions that weren't jump balls the DB's were 5 yards away from the recievers. That's ridiculous. There's no excuse for it. Of course what made all of that possible is Clemson's O'line played way over their heads, or Bama's D'line never got off the bus. Whichever, Clemson was a well prepared team and Bama looked like they had watched the wrong film and prepared for Louisville.
That's what happens when you come to a game with an entitled attitude.
Kudo's to Clemson.

Re: TNET: Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special

Jan 9, 2019, 1:22 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special ]

I think Clemson's coaching staff realize after film study of Bama's defense that nothing special was required. They evaluated Bama's D-Line and back 7 and realized that we could play them the same way we played the rest of the ACC schedule and soundly beat them on talent and a little execution. Your Dline wasn't as strong and pass rush wasn't as good Boston College, ND or Syracuse. Your DBs were on par with the worst we played all year (Louisville, Wake Forrest, and FSU). The DBs have looked undisciplined & clueless most of the season (although I think Surtain will be a great CB). We put in a few wrinkles on offense to make it seem like we had done something different on offense. But really it was a lot of the same plays. Against ND we had to run Trevor Lawrence (1st qtr) to open up our offense, with Bama we didn't have to do any of that, matter of fact he ran a few times for sport and to run down the clock in the fourth qtr. Because honestly we could have score 2 more times (1 by the backup offense) in the 4th qtr if we wanted to. So he is right Clemson's offense didn't have to do anything special to issue the beat down they gave Bama.

As far as our defense, the coaches knew all they had to do was keep Tua in the pocket, while making him feel pressured and at the same time taking away the slant routes and bingo! If you let him scramble too much he will eek out a long one but if you keep in the pocket and make him panick thinking about the pressure he is going to want to hit the quick slant pass bc that's been his bread and butter all season, so you take that away and you got him. So as a Bama fan the fact that not a whole lot of special plays were required to stump y'all should be alarming.

Re: TNET: Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special

Jan 9, 2019, 3:15 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Alabama defensive player says Clemson offense is nothing special ]

A lot has been said about receivers helping Trevor with poorly thrown balls salvaged by the leaping ( phenominal !) catches. He utilized the talent available to him to put the ball where no one but his receiver could catch the ball. Hence, no ints. !

Alabama players, notably, QB and DL are delusional with their post game comments. This is a joke. If I were a sports caster interviewing (which I'm not) I would have responded, "really, and why did Bama lose so bad..." "Looked like to the rest of the world that Clemson cleaned your clock! Awake-up and admit that they played an outstanding game and convincingly beat you."

Pretty soon QW and TT will be spinning how great Bama's win was. LOL

Very poor sportsmanship, on Bama's part, which reflects on what and how all others view Bama... losers...poor losers at that.

Bama offense was stymied by a very aggressive Tiger defense. Williams' ignorant comments will be bulletin board material if we play them next year. Saban should sit his players down and tell them to accept a loss like men, not whine like a poor sport. Maybe the culture of Alabama creates comments like Williams or maybe Williams is on his own. Yes...OU did expose a glaring weakness in Bama's defense which was lack of depth. In the natty we spread the field and wore them down making it increasingly difficult for their D. TL will continue to improve which means the sky is the limit. Alabama needs to correct their issues (like big mouthed players) otherwise even in their own conference they may face the end of their reign...

Quotes like this - and Tua’s which were similar - is what you get from kids who havent experienced what it means to get beat in a competitive situation. They don’t know how to respond to and get better from a loss. Hopefully they continue to prep in the same way- it’ll be fun to see other teams beat them with 50/50 balls.

Second, how does a Nick Saban coached team make repeated mental errors of that caliber if you accept that Saban is one of the great defensive coaches of our time. I'll take nothing special given the results!

Lack of ability to respect one's opponent is what we have here.

If there is one thing Dabo does well is respect all competition and work to go out and beat them.

Who ever this guy is will ultimately fail on big stages because he makes it all about him....

Jan 9, 2019, 11:09 AM

Well, I don't recall Williams doing much to prevent anything. Really, he's just like Saban and the rest of that mechanical-cant-think-for-themselves team, they can't admit they were bested for any other reason than their shortcomings. Saban is the master of the backhanded compliment...and Williams has an ego problem, but that's cool. He and those other Bama players that get drafted by will soon discover they aren't the Kings of the Homecoming dance anymore, and next time be they face members of Clemson's D-line, maybe their attitudes will be more respectful. Then again, you can't fix stupid and entitled.

How would a DL even know this? He was rushing the passer. He wouldn't know how the reception looked.

My thoughts exactly.
If I were his DL coach I'd be kicking his a$$ for critiquing the downfield play instead of doing his job.
What we have here, though, is a kid that got beat so bad he doesn't even know how it got done to him. Most of those mistakes and non-executions were the result of something being done TO them, and they're to dumb/arrogant to realize it.

First of all, he is right...tiger offense is quite ordinary in todays times, maybe some above average execution by some extraordinary young men but I think if Oklahoma has a matching defense they whip Alabama as well.
Next point, this dude is a bully, he took a cheap shot on the Sooner QB and the Sooner lineman took exception. He got it handed to him Monday night by our average (lol) line which by the way is made up of equally exceptional young men. Tiger nation must stay where we have been with our attitudes, please don't ever let us get to the point of being "those fans"...its fun now, it was fun in the 80s....lets go get a few more on the run to 10 natties!

Jan 9, 2019, 6:17 PM

It's amazing how their excuse is mental errors. Saban said the Tigers copy cat'd Oklahoma and Georgia to exploit Bama. So if that's the case why didn't Bama copy cat ND that pressured Lawrence or SC that hung 500 on us?

It's clear the Bama DL held little back trying to get at Lawrence... they just couldn't get by an OL that somehow undeserving ND managed to circumvent. The mental error was thinking they were as good as ND!

I think he may be upset that the O-line handled the Bama front pretty well, and Lawrence had just enough time to complete clutch passes, including plenty of 3rd downers. I'm guessing he didn't like Lawrence and the O-line running it down their throat on the final drive either. Bama didn't seem to have an answer for Etienne either, and are probably lucky he didn't get more carries. Feaster was going beast mode too...Also I dont really remember a single 50/50 ball, as Lawrence was placing the ball in tight spots where pretty much the only one who could make an actual play on the ball were his receivers. The chemistry between Lawrence and the receivers was special. Honestly the more I think about it, the more I feel like this dude is delusional and doesn't really deserve a response.

Quinnen Williams must have seriously bumped his head during the championship game. He had a brilliant year for us, and always spoke graciously when referring to previous opponents --- so I hope Clemson fans can forgive his temporary lapse of rationality. I assure you, his opinion does not represent the consensus among Tide faithful.

That performance y'all put-on Monday night was nothing short of an epic beatdown. And as painful as it was for me to watch, it's a whole lot easier to take when that beatdown is administered by a program --- and fan base --- for whom I have nothing but respect.

Here's hoping Dabo had it right when he told Saban, "See you next year." On second thought, would y'all mind sitting-out next year's championship game? ;)
