Sports Betting for dummies

Oct 20, 2017, 1:17 PM

To help setting an argument, I need your help.

Example:
Team A is favored to win by 6 points over Team B. Days later, the betting line lowers. Team A is now only favored to win by 3 points.

With all other factors constant or unchanged, what does this equate to when determine who the general public has been betting on? Does it mean that more people have taken Team A or more have taken Team B -- at the opening line?

Asking for a friend...

TIA

The line moves according to where the money is bet.

My understanding:

All things equal, more money has been coming in for team B.

Line is then reduced to 3 to make team A more appealing in order to encourage more betting of team A with the intention of making the final inflows if money between the two teams even.

More $$$ had been placed on Team B (not necessarily more people).

More money has been put on Team B.

At the opening more people felt Team B would win, or lose by less than 6 points. To even that out, the line is lowered so that people feel Team B would lose by more than the line.

Generally sharps move lines not the general public as well as what everyone else has said

" Does it mean that more people have taken Team A or more have taken Team B -- at the opening line?"

Not necessarily just means more money has been sent that way.

Makes sense. Thank you all.

IMO

Oct 20, 2017, 1:31 PM

I’m still learning ... the nomenclature is important ... Team A favored to win by 6 reads “Team A -6” ... They are favored to win so the spread is subtracted from their final score ... hence the minus sign ...

That move indicates the public placed a lot of bets on Team A -6.... “Vegas” wants as many people to bet as possible ... Since they make money whether you win or lose, the more bets the better ....

So if all the bets were placed in favor of team A ( Team A -6 ) , “ Vegas” is encouraging people who may have bet on team B had the spread been easier to beat ( like Team A -3 ) ... in this case the spread moved three points towards the underdog ...

Make sense ? Im asking too if their are any experts reading ... ??

"That move indicates the public placed a lot of bets on Team A -6..."

So your advice is opposite of the advice of those above?

If so, then your toughs are in line with the other side of the argument. Meaning, if Team A is "favored" to win by six @ -6 and lots of money was bet on Team A, wouldn't the sharps want to even things out and lower the spread more in favor of Team B to win "even things out"? If that is true, the it originally lowered because people were betting on Team A (not Team B).

I dont know the answer -- hence why I started this thread.

Watch the Mississippi st / Kentucky line. Been -11 1/2 for

Mississippi st all week. I must be missing something. This should be a -6-8 pt game.

Doesn't mean more people... just more money went one way***

Vegas always hedges their bets if too much money is

flowing one way. So, if they decide to give Team B less points than initial, it means too much money was being placed on Team B vs Team A with the initial spread. So, they take away points from Team B to make them less attractive to future bettors, hoping to even up the money somewhat.
