Regarding the expected foul calls...

Jan 16, 2018, 12:50 PM

The past three games at the Dean Dome the fouls have been called evenly. That being said, none of the games were ever that close so maybe that's why... hopefully the refs are fair tonight.

2015-16: Clemson - 13, UNC - 12
2013-14: Clemson - 19, UNC - 19
2011-12: Clemson - 12, UNC - 15

That being said, I do expect all foul calls to be soft so I hope Brad is telling our guys "If you're gonna foul them, foul the #### out of em!"

would it be a logical strategy to keep Eli on the bench

Jan 16, 2018, 12:57 PM

the entire first half? And tell him the whole 2nd half is his.

Seems that would be better than having him leave with 2 fouls and 16 minutes left in the 1st half with the score 8-6 or something like that. Then he starts the 2nd half, but has to walk on eggshells, and still has to go to the bench again with 17 mins and 3 fouls.

At least the other way he can play aggressive.

The ACC's general attack plan when Clemson fields a decent

Jan 16, 2018, 12:57 PM

team in hoops is to get the big men (ie rebounders) in foul trouble early ... make them sit most of the first half.

Then, if UNC isn't able to build a comfortable lead, resort to calling ticky-tack fouls on Clemson, swallow the whistle for UNC, and all "last touched" calls go UNC's way. Get UNC in the bonus early so they get plently of FT's.

In most ACC games the stuff that isnt a foul in the first half is one in the last 5 minutes

Well said - the early fouls will be offensive for us,

Defensive for UNC creating a change of posssession. Also once the game is out of reach, there will be 4-6 meaningless fouls called on UNC just to make it appear more even handed.

There are inflection points in games, calls or no calls ...

In those situations are more critical.

Total number of fouls can be misleading. It depends on who gets the fouls and when.

They could call 6 on UNC and 4 on Clemson in the first half but if 2 are on Thomas and 2 are on Donnal then our front court is very limited even though the foul totals are in our favor.

And looking a the box score afterward doesn't tell you that they called 5 fouls on UNC after the game was "over" and they were all non-shooting fouls. But the box looks more even that way, doesn't it?

Or, they call UNC for a ticky tack touch on a steal

Jan 16, 2018, 1:52 PM

so it both evens out the foul numbers and prevents a basket by us.

But they'll play it straight up and see if UNC can beat us on their own. They only really step in when needed.

I like that attitude. I always believe it should be worthy of the punishment

Just because the number of fouls called are even or close doesn’t mean the game is fairly called.
