Redman Makes Cut at PGA Championship

Aug 8, 2020, 8:12 AM

Clemson, S.C.—Former Clemson All-American and US Amateur Champion Doc Redman made the cut at the PGA Championship at Harding Park Golf Club in San Francisco on Friday. The native of North Carolina had a second round 67 and has a 36-hole score of even par 140, tied for 45th in the field of 156 golfers. He improved 62 places in the standings on Friday, tied for the fourth best improvement in the field.

Combined with his 20th place finish at last year’s Open Championship, Redman is just the fourth former Clemson golfer to make the cut in each of his first two major championships. Dillard Pruitt made the cut in each of his first five majors between 1989-92, and made the cut in six of his seven major championships in his career. Jonathan Byrd finished eighth at the Masters and 15th at the US Open in 2003 in his first two majors, while Charles Warren made the cut in both is his US Open appearances six years apart (2000 and 2006).

Redman’s 67 is the second lowest score in a PGA Championship by a former Clemson golfer. The record is a 66 by Lucas Glover at the PGA Championship at Medinah in 2006. It was just the sixth round in the 60s out of 114 rounds in the PGA Championship by former Clemson golfers.

After an opening round 73 had Redman in 109th place, he started the second round with three birdies on his first nine holes to shoot 32 on the back nine, his first nine of the day. He then shot one under par 35 on the front to finish with five birdies and two bogeys.

Redman is ranked in the top 10 in strokes gained putting for the first two rounds, the main reason he has made the cut for the 16th time in 22 tournaments this year.

Former Tiger Lucas Glover had a second round 72 to finish at 143 for the first two rounds and missed the cut by two shots.
