Probably Germans. Georgia reports 3 secondary violation

ATHENS — Georgia reported three NCAA secondary recruiting violations in football during a period of more than seven weeks in March and April. All three involved recruiting visits and preceded two support staffers leaving the program who worked in the recruiting office.

Director of on-campus recruiting Lukman Abdulai is no longer on the staff. Recruiting relations coordinator Dacia King was dismissed in April.

Georgia has yet to comment or provide the reason behind them no longer being employed, but an unidentified staff member was kept from on-campus recruiting activities for 30 days for a violation the school reported on April 29 for an impermissible entertainment violation. An “institutional staff member provided sideline access to a visiting student-athlete for approximately two minutes” during the April 20 G-Day game, according to a description provided by the school in an open records request.

The school stopped in-person contact on or off campus with the recruit for seven days from the first permissible contact date in response. The staff member was provided rules education.

Georgia also reported two football violations on March 8.

In one, a coaching staff member provided a personalized video to a recruit’s mother who did not accompany her son on a visit. That is impermissible under NCAA rules.

Georgia cut off communication via text, phone calls and visits with the prospect for 30 days and prohibited phone and electronic communication between the coach and recruit for 30 additional days. It also reduced the number of evaluation days for the year by two.

The other violation on March 8 occurred when a student-worker walked a recruit from the complimentary admission table to his seat and sat with him for five minutes, which falls under impermissible recruiting duties.

That prompted a letter of admonishment for the full-time staffer who allowed the student-worker to host. The student-worker was kept from taking part in any recruiting activities where recruits were present and limited to in-office administrative duties for the rest of the school year.

Georgia classified all three violations as Level III, which is considered isolated or inadvertent in nature and provides a minimal recruiting advantage.

Georgia did not identify the staffers involved.

King had received a promotion and a raise on March 1. She served previously as recruiting program coordinator.

Georgia has since hired Haley Schaafsma from Vanderbilt’s recruiting staff as director of recruiting operations.

Abdulai had been with the program for six years, working his way up from a recruiting student assistant to assistant recruiting operations coordinator and then to the director of on-campus recruiting role in January 2016 after coach Kirby Smart was hired.

He received a $23,000 raise after Georgia landed the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class in February.

Georgia listed 14 secondary violations total across all of its sports for the 2018-19 academic year. Another football violation was reported in July 2018 when a Bulldog player provided shoes to a recruit during an unofficial visit. Georgia said that player had a pre-exisiting relationship from high school with the recruit.

The recruit had to repay the $110 value of the shoes if he decided to attend Georgia.

A violation in men’s basketball was reported on Feb. 6 after a ninth-grade prospect attended a practice before the first permissible date for unofficial visits. He accompanied another prospect who was permitted to attend. The staff was unaware the ninth-grader planned to attend, the school said. Georgia will not recruit the ninth-grade prospect and will count the on-campus contact as of the permissible recruiting opportunities with the prospective recruit.

Nothing to worry about, just business as usual. Dogs always get a pass for licking a hind-end.
