Onside kick national championship game

Jan 19, 2016, 6:17 AM

Maybe this was talked about already and I just didn't see it, but how was that onside kick legal when the ball never touched the ground? I believe the rule is before the kicking team can try to grab the ball it must touch the ground, unless Clemson touched it first, then it's fair game. Please explain if I am wrong here. Seems the officiating was bad there.

Didn't he kick it into the ground to create the pop up effect?

The ball does not have to touch the ground.

However, if it doesn't, the receiving team must be given a fair chance to catch it in the air. But in this case, since no Clemson player was within several yards of the ball when the Alabama player caught it, no "kick-catch interference" was called.

In the 2014 South Carolina game, we were called for interference on an onsides kick because it never hit the ground and Jayron snatched the ball out of the air as it was about to be caught by a Gamecock player.

The right call was made in both cases according to the rules.

See Rule 6, Article 3 (copied and pasted from NCAA Rules and Interpretations 2015)

Touching and Recovery of a Free Kick
ARTICLE 3. a. No Team A player may touch a free-kicked ball until after:
1. It touches a Team B player (Exception: Rules 6-1-4 and 6-5-1-b);
2. IT BREAKS THE PLANE OF AND REMAINS BEYOND TEAM B’s RESTRAINING LINE (Exception: Rule 6-4-1) (A.R. 2-12-5-I); OR
3. IT TOUCHES ANY PLAYER (including Team A), THE GROUND, AN OFFICIAL OR ANYTHING BEYOND TEAM B’s RESTRAINING LINE.
THEREAFTER, ALL PLAYERS OF TEAM A BECOME ELIGIBLE TO TOUCH, RECOVER OR CATCH THE KICK.
b. Any other touching by Team A is illegal touching, a violation that, when the ball becomes dead, gives the receiving team the privilege of taking the ball at the spot of the violation.
c. If there is an accepted penalty for a live-ball foul by either team, or if there are offsetting fouls, the illegal touching privilege is canceled (A.R. 6-1-3-I).
d. Illegal touching in Team A’s end zone is ignored.

RULES 6-3-1 and 6-3-2 were satisfied.
RULE 6-4-1 does not apply as Thompson was two yards from the ball and the standard for interference is defined as one yard from the ball.

It was a perfectly executed onsides (free kick, not a scrimmage kick) kick.

There was an onsides kick in the national championship game??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the first I've heard of it.

If you delve into it further get back with your deliberation.

Didn't someone bring up a thread on it the day after the

game?

Of course, there were so many pivotal plays in that game, it could've gotten missed in discussions.

Grow thicker skin...

Do you honestly not think the biggest play of the game was not talked about on here?

There is a search function use it.

I posted something about it last week:

Jan 19, 2016, 9:31 AM

http://www.tigernet.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=18803310

The play in the USuCk game is at 29:20 in the second video. I had the right time embedded but it didn't stay that way.

I don't think the rule has anything to do with how the ball is kicked, just whether there's a player in the area to receive it.
