Only 4 undefeated ACC teams left, unlike the SEC powerhouse

Sep 23, 2018, 5:58 PM

conference with 4 undefeated teams left or the Big 10 or Big 12 with 2 undefeated teams left or the PAC 12 with 3 undefeated teams left.

The ACC is a joke people. Don't believe me? Just listen to espn.

Jim Mora isn't old enough to be retired from coaching.

The fact that he isn't coaching and instead is giving his opinion on football tells you all you need to know about his expertise.

It's a gauntlet. They beat each other up every week.

I think the ACC was pretty good the past few years before this one, and I still think Clemson is one of the best teams in the country with a chance to be the best this season. However, the ACC is bad this year, and trying to argue it isn't because we have 4 unbeaten teams just comes across as silly IMO.

Syracuse is unbeaten, but they've played Western Michigan(whom they beat 55-42), Wagner, FSU, and UConn.

NC State is unbeaten, but they've played James Madison(whom they beat 24-13, and scored a touchdown with 1 minute left in what had been a 4 point game) Georgia State, and Marshall.

Duke, I'll somewhat give you because they've at least played 2 OOC Power 5 teams.

Meanwhile:

Wake - Needed overtime to beat Tulane, and lost 56-27 to ND a week after Vandy lost to ND by only 5 points.

Florida sate - Got destroyed by a Va Tech team that lost to an 0-3 Old Dominion team, and needed a pick 6 late to hold on and beat Samford.

Louisville - Lost 51-14 to Bama, and only beat Western Kentucky by 3 points.

Boston College - Lost 30-7 to an 0-3 Purdue team that had lost to Missouri from the SEC the week before.

Virginia - Lost to Big 10 bottom feeder Indiana.

North Carolina - Lost to PAC 12 bottom feeder Cal, and lost 41-19 to East Carolina.

Pitt - Lost 51-6 to Penn State

Miami - Lost by 16 to LSU, and only beat Florida International by 14.

Georgia Tech - Lost by 11 to South Florida, and also lost to the same Pitt team that got destroyed by Penn State.

Va Tech - Lost by 14 points to an 0-3 Old Dominion team.

Yes the ACC has 4 unbeaten teams, but all of the other 10 have had embarrassing losses with most of those coming OOC, and even one of the unbeaten teams had a very ugly win against an FBS team, and is really only still unbeaten because of Hurricane Florence.

That isn't just ESPN or any other media picking on the ACC, that's simply terrible.

As for the SEC, yes they have 4 unbeaten teams, but Auburn only has 1 loss so far because they played LSU, and well 1 of them had to lose. Miss State's only loss so far is also to another SEC team, as is Florida's, South Carolina's, Missouri's, and Ole Miss. They've had some OOC losses, but where's the really embarrassing loss OOC for the SEC outside of Arkansas?

You can try and say it's because they haven't played anyone, but before you say that go back above and read where most of those losses from the ACC have come from.

To be clear, I don't think the SEC is full of amazing teams from top to bottom or anything, but it's simply silly to try and argue that the perception of the ACC so far is anything but it's own fault.

The ACC is really, really bad right now. Might as well admit it.

NC State and Syracuse have some firepower. The Wolfies still have Ryan Finley and some good WR's, though they're rebuilding other places. Both are deeply flawed on defense. Syracuse is allowing pretty close to 400 yards per game - good for about 80th, nationally, though again, the stats haven't updated yet - and NC State is allowing 347.0ypg, good for about 50th nationally - which is incredibly mediocre when you consider that they've played FBS-level JMU, Georgia State, and Marshall...they missed their one decent matchup against West Virginia when Florence rolled through.

Duke is well-coached, disciplined, and better than they're given credit for - they're Stanford Lite, pretty much - but the were also shockingly anemic on offense (101st overall at 360.3ypg) and not exactly stalwart on defense (77th overall, allowing 383.0ypg) until they got ahold of North Carolina Central this week, which just this year re-entered the FCS after spending years in Division II. (I had honestly never heard of them and had to look.) But that's scraping the bottom of the barrel, there. They do have decent wins if not overwhelming wins against Army, Northwestern, and Baylor, the last two on the road.

And that's pretty much it. Miami has looked like hot garbage since they got crushed by us last year in the ACCCG. BC was looking good until they got thumped - convincingly - by winless Purdue this past week. And VT just had the Mother of All Horrible Weeks...they lost their starting QB, probably for the year, had to throw their best defensive player (DE Travon Hill) after he apparently lost his mind and started attacking teammates on the field and in the locker room after the game...and oh, yeah, they lost to Old Dominion...easily the worst loss in D1 football this year and one that will haunt the Hokies for years to come.

In other news, Wake just fired their defensive coordinator after they got rolled for a second straight week, Louisville got crushed by Virginia, and FSU struggled to put away a Northern Illinois team with the very worst (129th overall) offense in college football. Rock on, Noles. Pitt and NC State are hot garbage.

Why the ACC is so bad this year is anybody's guess, but it's bad. Really bad. Storied programs like FSU and VT are really, really struggling and Miami is clearly not even close to back.

All we can do is play - and hopefully steamroll - whatever's in front of us.
