On Simpson, recruiting - & "Gentleman Jim Grobe"

The 5-star commitment from Simpson made me think of Coach Grobe.

I've known Jim close to 20 years - one of the real "good guys" in the business. One of his favorite lines at Wake used to be, "Well if we land a 4 or 5-star - in a week or two, they knock him down to a 3-star. If we get a 3-star, pretty soon he's unrated." He'd laugh about it, but that was true!

Coach G's one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Funny too!

Grobe did a great job at Wake. The conference misses him

The Grobe comment I remember most . . .

was his reply to the question, "What do you look for in a recruit?"

Without flinching or hesitation he said, "Character and Speed . . . everything else can be taught."
