They get a chance to get used to school. They get a chance to get stronger and up to speed with the older more experienced players.

But if you burn that redshirt, and then you get hurt later on in your career, you are no longer eligible for a medical redshirt

Are you sure? I seem to remember a few years back the Oklahoma quarterback was in school for 5 or 6 years and had multiple RS due to injury.

first redshirt is a player/coach decision, no sixth year.

This same fate is falling on the USC basketball player injured early this season. He won't get a sixth year because his RS his freshman year was voluntary, not due to injury.
