New experimental rules in the NIT

Mar 18, 2019, 9:01 AM

Here's a tongue twister for ya....

• Team fouls will reset at the 10-minute mark of each half for the purpose of determining free throws and one-and-one free throws will be eliminated. Teams will shoot two bonus free throws after the fifth team foul of each 10-minute segment. Additionally, teams will be awarded two bonus free throws after the second team foul committed under two minutes remaining in each half if that foul occurs before the fifth team foul of the segment. In each overtime period, team fouls will reset, and teams will shoot two free throws beginning with the fourth team foul or the second team foul committed under two minutes remaining if that comes before the fourth team foul of the overtime period.

did you get all that?

Jesus that is awful

And it leaves so much room for error. What if the second foul occurs exactly at the 2-minute mark? The refs are going to botch this.

committed under 2 minutes. if it occurs at exactly the two minute mark, it isn't under 2 minutes.

I still think the refs are going to blow it

What if the foul occurs at the 2-minute mark but the whistle is blown at 1:59? This is just about the most absurd rule change I've ever seen.

So how many fouls will Eli Thomas start each 10 minutes with?

I just want to know how this affects Clemson.

Also are the new rules meant to slow the game down or speed up the game?

I'm unclear on their reasoning.

it really isn't that complicated.

they're widening the lane to help unpack players down there. we're all tired of watching two big men locked up like sumo wrestlers trying to establish position. they're pushing the 3 point line out to the International game distance. they're reducing the shot clock on offensive rebounds because clearly teams don't need the extra 10 seconds when they aren't having to bring the ball up the court. And they've modified the free throws so that teams don't get rewarded for "Deaning" other teams with endless fouls in an effort to climb back in the game.
