Superstition or a routine that enables confidence, who cares when it works. I used to swing the bat 3 times hard in the on deck circle with the real pitch. It worked, some of the time !

just habits of mind. Superstition relates more to trust in false causes and the supernatural. Maybe a player sticking toothpicks in a doll or something.

And has anyone ever checked on the "success" rate of not talking to the pitcher during late stages of a no-hitter. Wonder how many no-hits have been blown when that happened.
