Interesting indeed. I think there’s a few more years not covered there though - I believe the total championships between and including 1989 and 2017 comes out to 29. My apologies if I’m missing something. I like these kind of stats - history has a tendency to repeat itself!

I'm counting 36...

assuming that "#6 through #11, #13, #19, #22, and NR - 1" means one EACH for those ranked 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 19, 22, and NR.

You are correct.

If you go back to 1981 there are at least 2 “NR’s”***

^^^Check 1980. CLEMSON defeated the defending NC with Herschel Walker the following year, and won the 1981 NC.

Not nitpicking but I count 31 (I like the #31):
4 + 7 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 10 = 31. And how do we get
thirty-something champs in 29 seasons, counting
co champs some years not just AP champs?

My guess is 29 seasons and a couple seasons where co-champs were crowned. Georgia Tech and Colorado in the 90's come to mind. Oh, and Central Florida last season.... I kid... I kid....
